'Transformers 3' dominates 'Horrible Bosses'

Michael Bay's explosive 3D sequel "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" crushed its competition Friday with an estimated $14.9 million in ticket sales. The third film in the insanely popular series brought its domestic total to a strong $228.8 million.

Following in second place was new release "Horrible Bosses," which performed rather well with $9.9 million from 3,040 sites. The comedy starring Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis scored an average of $3,263 per theater.

At No. 3, Kevin James' new comedy "Zookeeper" finished with $7.4 million. The Sony release is currently playing at 3,482 sites. Pixar's sequel "Cars 2" followed in fourth place with $4.8 million Friday, lifting its domestic cume to $138.4 million.

This week's new movie releases - July 8, 2011

Now that the big Fourth of July weekend has passed, it's time to prepare for the next major blockbuster. That would be the final "Harry Potter" film, but we'll have to wait another week for it. This week, we're in for the return of Kevin James and a new adventure for Jason Bateman.

HORRIBLE BOSSES, with Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis

The new film by Seth Gordon ("The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters") looks pretty hilarious, although it also promises to be quite raunchy. At least it boasts quite the remarkable cast, and that may just as well be the comedy's biggest strength. Who knows... maybe this could be one of the funnier films of the summer. My excitement meter: 8/10.

ZOOKEEPER, with Kevin James, Rosario Dawson and Leslie Bibb

Zoo animals decide to start talking to a zookeper in order to help him find love. The zookeeper happens to be Kevin James, and yes, that's about all you have to know about it. Truth be told, this family flick looks disastrous, and that's really all I have to say about it. My excitement meter: 1/10.

Full trailer for 'Zookeeper' kinda disappoints

Kevin James stars in Zookeeper

Kevin James has a new comedy coming soon, and this time, he's playing a zookeeper trying to hook up with the girl of his dreams. The problem is he has no clue how to get the job done, and that's where the talking animals come in. It looks as ridiculous as it sounds. See for yourself in the new trailer after the jump.

In fact, "Zookeeper" looks like many other lame comedies James starred in recently. I respect James as a solid comedian who made TV a lot better when he was on the air, but his big-screen gigs certainly haven't given him the ability to show audiences what he can do. Being clumsy doesn't really cut it.

Here's your dose of quick news bits for Jan. 8, 2009...

• Kevin James will star in Walt Becker's comedy "Zookeeper," the actor told ComingSoon recently: "I play a zookeeper—another guy in a uniform, no moustache in this one, we may go very bushy sideburns—I don't even know, but it's in the beginning stages of that." James will next be seen in "Paul Blart: Mall Cop."

• Darko Entertainment has acquired the big-screen rights for Robert Cormier's "Fade," a novel about a 13-year-old who finds out he has the ability to fade. Of course, he soon learns how dangerous his powers can be. Adam Prince is set to write the script. (Variety)
