'Mad Men' star Jon Hamm throws 'Sucker Punch'

Jon Hamm

Let me tell you, I feel terrible because I still haven't seen one single episode of "Mad Men," but right now, I just don't have the freaking time. I promise it's on my list though. Anyway, "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm has now joined Zack Snyder's upcoming action adventure "Sucker Punch," this according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Hamm joins the already cast Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, Abbie Cornish and Carla Gugino. The flick is set in the '50s and centers on a girl locked inside a mental institution. During her stay there, she imagines an alternative reality in which she plans her escape...

Check out this sweet deleted scene from 'Watchmen'

The director's cut of Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" will be released on DVD and Blu-ray July 21, 2009, and here is a deleted scene you'll be able to find on the disc.

As you can see in the three-minute clip below, this scene centers on the death of Hollis Mason (Night Owl I), played by Stephen McHattie.

Yes, I admit I really enjoy the beauty of this scene. It's visually pleasing and backed by a great musical piece, and even though it drags a tiny bit at times, it works for me.

Check out "Watchmen" on Amazon right now to preorder your copy. The back of the disc says the director's cut will be 24 minutes longer than the theatrical version. Anyone excited about this release?

Movie Review: "Watchmen" - Franck's take

Seen on: March 6, 2009

The players: Director: Zack Snyder, Writers: Alex Tse, David Hayter, Cast: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson

Facts of interest: Based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

The plot: In an alternate 1985, someone is killing former costumed heroes, inspiring the few who remain to don their disguises again to uncover the truth.

Our thoughts: I never read Alan Moore’s graphic novel and I probably won’t get to it in the near future, but considering all the exciting trailers, spots and clips I’ve seen over the past months, I admit I walked into “Watchmen” with incredibly high expectations. In fact, I was dying to see what all this recent hype was all about.

Movie Review: "Watchmen" - Joseph's take

Seen on: March 6, 2009

The players: Director: Zack Snyder, Writers: Alex Tse, David Hayter, Cast: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson

Facts of interest: Based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

The plot: In an alternate 1985, someone is killing former costumed heroes, inspiring the few who remain to don their disguises again to uncover the truth.

Our thoughts: Up until last year, I have to admit I had never heard of “Watchmen.” Apparently, I was too far removed from the realm of the graphic novel to have heard of one of the most influential graphic novels of all time. This doesn’t surprise me, really, because I’m not that kind of geek (I’m a geek; just not that kind).

'Watchmen' delivers $25.1M at Friday box office

Many people out there are watching "Watchmen," because Zack Snyder's adaptation of the graphic novel scored $25.1 million Friday at the North American box office.

Then again, that's about $3 million less than the opening Friday gross of Snyder's previous flick "300," which opened Match 9, 2007 at 3,103 locations. In comparison, "Watchmen" debuted at 3,611 locations.

At No. 2, Tyler Perry's "Mades Goes to Jail" brought in $2.5 million, lifting its domestic total to $70.2 million. Following in third place was "Taken," which reached a cumulative gross of $112.9 million after Friday's earnings of $2.3 million.

Meanwhile, Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" earned another $1.9 million, bringing its total to $120.4 million. The Ken Kwapis-directed comedy "He's Just Not That Into You" finished fifth with a daily gross of $1.3 million and a total haul of $81.9 million.

'Watchmen' web reviews

Zack Snyder's anticipated big-screen version of "Watchmen" has finally arrived in theaters, and here is what some of the Web's critics have to say about the movie:

CinemaBlend's Josh Tyler: "What matters most is that this is a movie with ambition, a movie with balls, a movie unafraid to tear across the screen leaving a trail of broken lives and unanswered, frightening questions in its wake."

Ron Henriques at LatinoReview: "Yes, Snyder and his creative team have replicated images and story elements from the comic in great detail, but no matter how you cut it this is not 'Watchmen' and could never be."

RopeOfSilicon's Brad Brevet: "Fact is it just didn't work for me, but I would be robbing you of a potential great experience if I didn't urge you to go see it and judge for yourself as I am sure there will be those that disagree with me completely."

Cinematical's Peter Martin: "Prepare to be bludgeoned. Watchmen is sledgehammer entertainment, an action epic with tremendous production values that acknowledges good and evil but is much more interested in things that go boom."

Seyfried, Hudgens to star in 'Sucker Punch'

The release of "Watchmen" is not stopping Zack Snyder from working on his upcoming projects.

In fact, Snyder is busy casting "Sucker Punch," and according to the Hollywood Reporter, Amanda Seyfried is in negotiations to join the cast.

Also in talks to board the project are Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Evan Rachel Wood and Emma Stone. Interesting, interesting!

The fantasy action flick is set in the 1950s, and centers on a girl locked inside a mental institution. During her stay there, she imagines an alternative reality in which she plans her escape by trying to steal five objects she needs to regain her freedom.

The trade says Seyfried would play the lead character, while the others would star as her inmates, who will also show up in her imagined reality.

A film about a bunch of hot actresses locked up in a crazy house? Sounds fun and creepy at the same time, doesn't it?

Seyfried starred in the dreadful adaptation of "Mamma Mia!" Cornish, the star of the fantastic drama "Somersault," also played in "Stop-Loss." Stone recently appeared in "The Rocker."

This week's new movie releases - March 6, 2009

It's a very quiet week, and the only wide release to open Friday is Zack Snyder's anticipated big-screen adaptation of "Watchmen." Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson star. Let's take a closer look:

WATCHMEN

Synopsis: Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes.

First thoughts: I admit I never read the graphic novel the film is based on, but I am utterly excited to experience "Watchmen" in theaters this weekend. The many reviews I glimpsed at over the past week were very mixed, with some praising the film for so many reasons while others were rather negative.
