Review: "The Spirit"

Seen on: December 26, 2008

The players: Director: Frank Miller, Writer: Frank Miller, Cast: Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Sarah Paulson, Jaime King, Paz Vega

Facts of interest: Based on the graphic novels by Will Eisner.

The plot: After returning from the dead, former cop Denny Colt battles crime in Central City as the Spirit.

Our thoughts: I was really looking forward to the big-screen adaptation of Will Eisner’s graphic novel series “The Spirit,” but what I ended up seeing didn’t fulfill my expectations at all. Frank Miller’s solo directorial debut should have been an amazing ride, but in the end, it’s nothing but a boring mess that looks great but fails to entertain.

Six new but weird 'The Spirit' clips debut

Frank Miller's "The Spirit" opens this Thursday, and if you feel you just can't wait to see the movie, here are seven new clips that recently popped up over at Yahoo!

Based on the graphic novels by Will Eisner, the movie centers on rookie cop Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht), who returns from the dead to battle crime in Central City. Samuel L. Jackson plays The Octopus, one of his enemies.

Also starring are Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson, Jaime King and Sarah Paulson. Now, I don't know about you, but most of these clips just seem pretty weird to me.

Sure, while the visual style still looks attractive enough, I just can't get over how ridiculous the dialogue sounds. It all seems too rehearsed, almost laughable, and I'm not quite sure if Miller intentionally wanted it to comes across this way.

Anyway, check them out below and let me know what you think. I hope the movie as a whole is better than this.

New holiday-themed 'The Spirit' TV spot hits!

Violence and Christmas; don't they go hand in hand? Well, for "The Spirit," they sure do. After the jump you'll find a new holiday-themed TV spot for the movie, which opens Dec. 25.

The only thing they did to this spot to make is all Christmassy is add a softer song to the still visually pleasing footage.

Directed by Frank Miller, "The Spirit" follows Gabriel Macht as rookie cop Denny Colt, who mysteriously returns from the dead to take down crime in Central City. His worst enemy is the ruthless Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), who plots to destroy Central City for good.

Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson, Jaime King and Sarah Paulson co-star. The film is based on the graphic novel by Will Eisner.

Also be sure to check back in with us tonight: we're currently setting up a cool contest you will be able to enter for a chance to win an awesome "The Spirit" book.
