Movie Review: “The International”

Seen on: February 14, 2009

The players: Director: Tom Tykwer, Writer: Eric Singer, Cast: Clive Owen, Naomi Watts, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Ulrich Thomsen, Brian O Byrne

Facts of interest: Tykwer also directed "Run, Lola, Run."

The plot: Clive Owen stars as an Interpol Agent trying everything in his power to bring down a ruthless bank involved in illegal activities.

Our thoughts: Tom Tykwer’s “The International” is an over-the-top, engrossing and fast-paced thriller boasting fine performances, a bunch of decent action and solid production values. It’s quite an exciting ride really… if you’re willing to suspend your disbelief for most of the film’s two-hour running time.

'The International' web reviews

Tom Tykwer returns with "The International," a thriller starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts. In the film, the two team up to bring down a ruthless world bank. Here is what the Web's critics have to say about the flick:

• William Goss at Cinematical: "Throughout, 'The International' is a thankfully, skillfully mature effort by Tykwer to produce a proper thriller for adults, that of a man on a mission, and one lent little extra resonance in our cash-strapped times."

• Ron Henriques at LatinoReview: "The story of "The International' has more twists and turns and convoluted sub-plots than what most audiences can handle and although this isn't really a popcorn picture, the thrill is in the chase rather than what the heroes are chasing."

• Brad Brevet at RopeOfSilicon: "For what it's worth The International at least has some moments of real entertainment, and while that isn't really saying much it at least gives me something to meekly recommend if a friend calls and asks, something I found myself unable to do only a week ago."

Joblo's Chris Bumbray: "I hope people will get out and see it this weekend, as it deserves to be a major hit."

• Kevin Carr at FilmSchoolRejects: "The plot is convoluted and ridiculous. On one hand, the bank is supposed to be all powerful. On the other hand, it hinges its entire existence on one smoke-and-mirrors weapon deal."
