Screenwriters set for 'Mission: Impossible IV'

A couple of months ago, we found out J.J. Abrams and Tom Cruise decided to team up to produce "Mission: Impossible IV," and now, the sequel has found its screenwriters.

Writing the fourth installment in the action series are Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec, whose credits include "Alias," "October Road" and "Life on Mars."

Variety says Abrams and Cruise are only set to produce the film at this point. Ethan Hunt's character, however, will also somehow be involved in the film. Not so sure what that means at right now, but I'm sure we'll figure it out once casting takes off.

Appelbaum and Nemec will write a script based on an idea they developed with Abrams. Abrams most recently directed "Star Trek," and Tom Cruise was last seen in "Valkyrie."

Von Donnersmarck may direct '28th Amendment'

German filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck is in talks to direct Warner Bros.' upcoming drama "The 28th Amendment."

According to Variety, Tom Cruise is still attached to star in the project, which centers on the president as he discovers his country is in fact run by a secret organization that pretty much eliminates everybody who poses a threat against the United States.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, whose credits include "Star Trek," "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "Alias," are rewriting their own script.

Von Donnersmarck's fantastic drama "The Lives of Others" (Das Leben der Anderen) won the foreign language Oscar in 2007. This would be his first film since the win.

As for Cruise, he's currently trying to keep himself busy with new projects. Projects he's currently considering include "The Tourist" and "Motorcade."

Tom Cruise to face Denzel Washington in 'Matarese'

Tom Cruise is in talks to star in David Cronenberg's upcoming adaptation of Robert Ludlum’s political thriller “The Matarese Circle."

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Cruise would jump into the role of Russian spy Vasili Taleniekov, who's the biggest enemy of American intelligence operative Brandon Scofield (Denzel Washington).

Derek Haas, Michael Brandt and Cronenberg worked on the script, which follows these two men as they are forced to launch into a collaboration to put and end to a political conspiracy run by an organization called the Matarese.

Ludlum also wrote the popular Jason Bourne novels, which were successfully adapted into three excellent big-screen action blockbusters.

Cruise last starred in Bryan Singer's "Valkyrie," in which he delivered a decent enough performance. But another big blockbuster certainly wouldn't hurt.

Washington also has several projects coming up, including "The Book of Eli" and "The Taking of Pelham 123." As for Cronenberg, he recently directed the excellent "Eastern Promises."

The players: Director: Bryan Singer, Writers: Nathan Alexander, Christopher McQuarrie, Cast: Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Carice Van Houten, Thomas Kretschmann

Facts of interest: Singer also directed "The Usual Suspects," "X2" and "Superman Returns."

The plot: The film follows a group of Gernan officers plotting to assassinate Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944.

Our thoughts: One of the more serious films opening on Christmas Day last week was Bryan Singer’s “Valkyrie,” a thoroughly entertaining and historically compelling WWII thriller that boasts excellent performances and awesome production values.

'Valkyrie' web reviews

Tom Cruise returns to the big screen in Bryan Singer's "Valkyrie," a WWII drama about a group of soliders plotting to assassinate Hitler. Here's what some online critics have to say about it:

Cinematical's Scott Weinberg: "I say it's worth seeing for its irresistible ensemble of character actors, a handful of really well-crafted sequences, and a truth-based story that simply deserves to be repeated."

CinemaBlend's Katey Rich: "But what keeps Valkyrie so light on its feet is an appreciation for history, not slavish devotion, so that timelines can be condensed and characters excised with the basic, thrilling story intact at its center."

• Matt Goldberg at Collider: "But without characters or themes, it's just a soulless History Channel documentary with killer production values."

• Ron Henriques at LatinoReview: "A major flaw in the story is that although this group of anti-Hitler radicals seem dedicated in stopping evil, they are too clean cut."

Tom Cruise not in talks to voice 'Shrek 4' villain

Two weeks ago Cinema Blend posted a story about the possibility of Tom Cruise being considered to lend his voice to one of the villains you’ll see in DreamWorks Animations’ “Shrek Goes Fourth,” but according to rep Jeff Raymond, that rumor is not true.

Talking to E! news, Raymond said, "As of today, there is no truth to the Tom Cruise-Shrek 4 rumor." But that's pretty much all he said about it.

Apparently, the rumor made it all the way into a Los Angeles Times blog entry after it first appeared. As of tomorrow, however, nobody will be talking about it anymore. Although DreamWorks declined to comment, this is pretty much it for now - no Cruise in the fourth "Shrek" flick.

And honestly, who cares anyway? I gave up on the stinky ogre after "Shrek the Third," and I doubt they'll be able to reinvent the franchise. If they do, good for them AND me. See you in far far away land...
