Trailer for Ricky Gervais' 'The Invention of Lying'

Ricky Gervais in The Invention of Lying

Ricky Gervais's next project (co-diretced with Matthew Robinson) is a comedy entitled "The Invention of Lying," which will hit theaters Sept. 25, 2009. A first trailer for the film debuted online, and you should check it out below.

The flick is set in a world where lying does not exist. Everyone - from politicians to advertisers to the man and woman on the street - speaks the truth and nothing but the truth with no thought of the consequences.

But when a down-on-his-luck loser named Mark suddenly develops the ability to lie, he finds that dishonesty has its rewards. In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark easily lies his way to fame and fortune.

But lies have a way of spreading, and Mark begins to realize that things are getting a little out of control when some of his tallest tales are being taken as, well, gospel. Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill and Rob Lowe co-star.

Sounds like a charming concept, and judging by this footage, "Lying" seems to be typical Gervais comedy and along the lines of "Ghost Town," a film I really enjoyed. What do you think?

Downey Jr., Fey to team up for 'Master Mind'

Robert Downey Jr. and Tina Fey are in talks to voice the lead characters in DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming comedy “Master Mind,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

Written by Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, this parody of the superhero genre centers on a villain who slips into a crisis after accidentally killing his nemesis.

As EW also points out, both Downey Jr. and Fey already have some voice-over experience. Downey Jr. lent his voice to a character in “A Scanner Darkly,” while Fey voiced a burrito in “Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters.”

Although this project sounds really interesting and the pairing of Downey Jr. and Fey seems perfect, just imagine how awesome it would be to watch them do this in live action.

Downey Jr. can currently be seen in Ben Stiller’s action comedy “Tropic Thunder.” He will next star opposite Jamie Foxx in Joe Wright’s “The Soloist.” As for Fey, she’s about to return for a new season of television’s “30 Rock.”

Steve Carell, Tina Fey marry for ‘Date Night’

Steve Carell and Tina Fey have signed on to play husband and wife in Shawn Levy’s “Date Night” for 20th Century Fox, according to Variety.

In the film written by Josh Klausner, the married couple discovers their usual date night goes beyond dinner and a movie. That’s all we know about the plot at this stage.

Levy, whose directing credits include “Cheaper by the Dozen” and “Night at the Museum,” is currently filming “Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian.”

Carell most recently starred alongside Anne Hathaway in “Get Smart.” Fey was last seen opposite Amy Poehler in “Baby Mama.”

Both Carell and Fey are looking at potential Emmy wins for their television comedy shows “The Office” and “30 Rock.”

Neither “Baby Mama” nor “Get Smart” really won me over, but that doesn’t mean Fey and Carell will fail to pull this off. In fact, the pairing of the two for a big-screen comedy sounds pretty interesting. Let’s hope the script is worth it.
