Review: “9”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: August 28, 2009

The players: Director: Shane Acker, Writer: Pamela Pettler, Cast: Elijah Wood, Christopher Plummer, Martin Landau, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly

Facts of interest: "9" was co-produced in Luxembourg, my home country. Neat!

The plot: In a world in which humanity was defeated in a battle against machines, a rag doll named 9 sets out on a mission to save what is left on the planet.

Our quick thoughts: Director Shane Acker took an acclaimed short film he created and developed it into a big-screen adventure with the support of producers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov. Sounds neat, doesn’t it? The result is Focus Features’ “9,” a decent animated action film that boasts incredibly intriguing visuals but fails to impress in the story department.

The first teaser trailer for Tim Burton's upcoming "Alice in Wonderland" is now officially online, and I am definitely among those digging it. Yes, I do enjoy Burton's eccentric cinematic style, and yes, I am most definitely looking forward to his version of this classic tale.

The focus of this preview lies on Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter of course, but you do get a perfect look at Mia Wasikowska in the role of Alice. Sure, the visual effects look quite stunning as well.

"Alice" is a mix of live action and performance capture, and the film will hit theaters in 3D March 5, 2010. Anne Hathway, Helena Bonham Carter, Matt Lucas and Crispin Glover co-star, among others.

So, Johnny Depp fans, what do you think about his latest stunt after seeing him going all weirdo again in this teaser? Please do sound off below.

Fancy more 'Alice in Wonderland' photos? You got it.

I don't know about you, but I'm already eagerly waiting for a teaser trailer for Tim Burton's vision of "Alice in Wonderland," which won't open in theaters until March 5, 2010.

In the meantime, I've stumbled across several set pics and concept art, and just the other day, I found some more pics from the upcoming mix of live action and performance capture.

The pics (from Vanity Fair) were posted on Planeta Disney (via CS), and they offer you a glimpse at Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Mia Wasikowska as Alice. Oh, and the third one is that famous Johnny Depp shot as the Mad Hatter. I'm sure you've seen it already.

Anne Hathaway, Matt Lucas and Crispin Glover co-star, among others. The film will also be released in 3D.

Ever since I first heard about Tim Burton's take on "Alice in Wonderland," I've been dying to find out how the film will look like. I mean, you're pretty much always in for a surprise with Burton.

The folks at USA Today just received some concept art from the upcoming film, and you can check out some of it above and below, and more here. Looks quite intriguing indeed!

Last year, I posted an early look of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, and that picture was pretty close to the look you can see below. Darn, he looks creepy, doesn't he?

Mia Wasikowska, Anne Hathway, Helena Bonham Carter, Matt Lucas and Crispin Glover co-star in the film, a mix of live action and performance capture. The film will also be released in 3D March 5, 2010.

Fantastic trailer for '9' finally debuts online!

Have you already seen the beautiful trailer for Shane Acker's upcoming animated movie "9"? If not, check it out after the jump.

Based on his own short film, Acker's film is set in a parallel world, in which a post-apocalyptic nightmare threatens humanity's legacy. Now it's up to a race of oppressed rag dolls to fight for survival.

"9" is produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov, and the film features the voices of Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover, Martin Landau and John C. Reilly.

As you can see below, the animation looks gorgeous and highly imaginative. It also looks a little bit like an exciting, explosive adventure game you would want to play on your Playstation 3.

Watch out for "9" in theaters Sept. 9, 2009.

First image of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter

The folks over at Johnny-Depp.org have posted what they claim is the first image of Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland."

I have to admit this is quite an extravagant picture, but the more often I look at it, the more interesting it looks. After all, we're talking a Tim Burton film here.

For this reimagining of "Wonderland," Burton uses a mix of live action and performance capture. Mia Wasikowska, Anne Hathway, Helena Bonham Carter, Matt Lucas and Crispin Glover co-star.

The flick is currently shooting, but it won't be ready that soon; Walt Disney plans to release it in 3D in 2010.

Crispin Glover boards ‘Alice in Wonderland’

Crispin Glover has boarded Tim Burton’s take on “Alice in Wonderland,” which is currently in principal photography.

The Hollywood Reporter says Glover is playing the Knave of Hearts, who goes on trial for stealing the Queen of Heart’s tarts.

Glover joins a cast that includes Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathway, Helena Bonham Carter and Matt Lucas.

Burton uses a mix of live action and performance capture to shoot the film, which Walt Disney plans to release in 3D in 2010.

Glover recently starred as Grendel in Robert Zemeckis’ “Beowulf.” He has several projects in development, including “The Forlorn” and “The I Scream Man.”

Last month we posted an “Alice in Wonderland” set pic with links to more right here.

Hathaway, Carter join 'Alice in Wonderland'

Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter have signed on to star in Tim Burton’s new take on Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The trade says Hathaway is set to play the White Queen, the kind monarch banished by the Queen of Hearts (Carter), who’s known for yelling “Off with their heads!”

Australian actress Mia Wasikowska is already on board to play Alice, while Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter. Matt Lucas plays Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Also starring is Michael Sheen.

The project, which has started shooting and will be released in 3D in 2010, is described as a mix of live action and performance-capture technology.

Hathaway recently received plenty of critical acclaim for her performance in “Rachel Getting Married.” The actress will next be seen in “Passengers,” followed by Gary Winick’s “Bride Wars.”

Carter, who’s obviously a regular in Burton’s flick, last starred in “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” She will also briefly appear in McG’s “Terminator Salvation.”

Wow, what a great cast they’re getting together for this. My curiosity is rapidly growing.

Sheen lands roles in ‘Unthinkable,’ ‘Wonderland’

Michael Sheen, who delivered an excellent performance as Tony Blair in Stephen Frears’ “The Queen,” has been cast in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” and Gregor Jordan’s “Unthinkable,” according to Variety.

In “Unthinkable,” Samuel L. Jackson stars a black-ops interrogator (Jackson) who teams up with an FBI agent (Carrie-Ann Moss) to press a suspect into revealing the locations of three nuclear weapons. What part Sheen will play is unknown at this stage.

The actor will also be seen in Burton’s new take on “Alice in Wonderland,” which stars Mia Wasikowska in the titular role. Also starring is Johnny Depp, who portrays the Mad Hatter.

Sheen most recently starred in “Blood Diamond.” He will next be seen in Ron Howard’s drama “Frost/Nixon,” in which he plays British television presenter David Frost.

Other future projects include “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” and “The Damned United.” Rumor has it Sheen may reprise his role as Blair in “The Special Relationship,” which looks at the former prime minister’s relationship with Clinton and George W. Bush.
