Five worst films of 2009 (so far)

We're only two months into 2009, and I regret to announce I've already seen tons of bad movies this year. January was a mess, February wasnt exactly better either, and March... well, we'll see.

Below you'll find the five films I hated most this year. Of course, 2009 is far from over, but these are the worst of January/February:

5. INKHEART
I simply had to put "Inkheart" on this list because it's undoubtedly the most boring film I've seen so far this year. I decided to stick around until the end because I hoped the final part of the movie would at least be a tiny bit entertaining, but as it turned out, that was not the case.

Commentary: January '09 was a bad movie month!

It's not a big surprise, really. January is usually a very weak month as far as new, wide releases are concerned, and this first month of 2009 was certainly no exception. Indeed, it was dreadful for the most part!

But let's take a quick look at what sucked and what ruled in theaters in January '09:

THE BAD

Where to start? The very first movie I saw in theaters this year was "Bride Wars," and it was a truly painful experience. Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway waging war against each other sounded funny at first, but the actual battle turned out to be a pathetic experience.

Other comedies in January included "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," which really sucked, and "New in Town," a rather boring and totally unsurprising romantic comedy with Renee Zellweger. As for Thor Freudenthal's family comedy "Hotel for Dogs," it didn't exactly win me over either, although I admit it was more entertaining than the previous bunch.

'He's Just Not That Into You' takes box office lead

Ken Kwapis' latest comedy "He's Just Not That Into You" topped the North American box office Friday with an estimated $10.5 million in ticket sales.

Featuring a cast including Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Connolly, Bradley Cooper, Ginnifer Goodwin and Scarlett Johansson, the film follows a bunch of individuals discovering new truths about dating and married life.

At No. 2, Pierre Morel's thriller "Taken" scored another $6.3 million, lifting its total haul to $39.3 million after one week in theaters. Following in third place with $4.5 million was Henry Selick's 3D stop-motion adventure "Coraline," based on the book by Neil Gaiman.

Meanwhile, new entry "Push" debuted at No. 4 with $3.5 million, beating "The Pink Panther 2," which only made it to fifth place with $3.3 million. The latter stars Steve Martin as Inspector Clouseau, who's on a mission to find a thief and retrieve the stolen Pink Panther diamond.

Other results from Friday's box office: "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" takes No. 6 with $2.7 million, while "The Uninvited" pulled $2.1 million in seventh place. Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" finished at No. 8 with $1.9 million.

Review: "The Uninvited"

Seen on: January 31, 2009

The players: Directors: Thomas Guard, Charles Guard, Writers: Doug Miro, Craig Rosenberg, Cast: Elizabeth Banks, David Strathairn, Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel

Facts of interest: Based on Kim Jee-Woon's "A Tale of Two Sisters."

The plot: Two sisters try everything they can to convince their father that his new girlfriend is not the person she pretends to be.

Our thoughts: Charles and Thomas Guard’s “The Uninvited” is yet another lame, unnecessary horror remake that lacks suspense and falls victim to a nearly disastrous script. No matter how bad these flicks are, they just keep coming, and it’s annoying me now more than ever.

'The Uninvited' web reviews

In "The Uninvited," two sisters try to convince their father that his current fiancee is not who she pretends to be. Elizabeth Banks, David Strathairn, Emily Browning and Arielle Kebbel star, and here is what some online critics have to say about the horror pic:

Collider's Brian Orndorf: "'The Uninvited' might appeal to the "Tale of Two Sisters" curious, but even then there's little reason to stay invested in what quickly becomes a grueling 80-minute-long journey into the easily telegraphed and roughly acted."

CinemaBlend's Katey Rich: "The scares are interspersed in-between these landscape shots, but the film never achieves an actual mood of mystery, and the occasional appearance of ghosts seems more to keep the audience interested than to add to the story."

Cinematical's Jette Kernion: "'The Uninvited' provides a few shocks and some creepy dream-or-not sequences that are perfect for a date horror movie. However, the structure and dialogue are weak without even being unabashedly cheesy fun like the 3-D remake of My Bloody Valentine."

• Ron Henriques at LatinoReview: "I don't know about you, but I thought the "J-horror" craze was over. Hollywood seems so determined to remake every supernatural horror flick from the land of the rising sun whether it be good or bad."

This week's new movie releases - Jan. 30, 2009

This week of movie releases is not necessarily one I'm looking forward too, but here's a quick look at what's on the menu this Friday: "New in Town" with Renee Zellweger, "Taken" with Liam Neeson and "The Uninvited" with Emily Browning, David Strathairn and Elizabeth Banks.

NEW IN TOWN

Synopsis: A Miami businesswoman (Renee Zellweger) is transferred to rural Minnesota, and while she is there she re-evaluates her big-city values.

First thoughts: Renee Zellweger cozying up to Harry Connick Jr. in a little, cold Minnesota town? Doesn't sound too exciting, now does it? While I admit Zellweger has a charm that's hard to resist, the trailer of "New in Town" makes her look like someone who'd probably get on my nerves after five minutes.
