Five worst films of 2009 (so far)

We're only two months into 2009, and I regret to announce I've already seen tons of bad movies this year. January was a mess, February wasnt exactly better either, and March... well, we'll see.

Below you'll find the five films I hated most this year. Of course, 2009 is far from over, but these are the worst of January/February:

5. INKHEART
I simply had to put "Inkheart" on this list because it's undoubtedly the most boring film I've seen so far this year. I decided to stick around until the end because I hoped the final part of the movie would at least be a tiny bit entertaining, but as it turned out, that was not the case.

Commentary: January '09 was a bad movie month!

It's not a big surprise, really. January is usually a very weak month as far as new, wide releases are concerned, and this first month of 2009 was certainly no exception. Indeed, it was dreadful for the most part!

But let's take a quick look at what sucked and what ruled in theaters in January '09:

THE BAD

Where to start? The very first movie I saw in theaters this year was "Bride Wars," and it was a truly painful experience. Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway waging war against each other sounded funny at first, but the actual battle turned out to be a pathetic experience.

Other comedies in January included "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," which really sucked, and "New in Town," a rather boring and totally unsurprising romantic comedy with Renee Zellweger. As for Thor Freudenthal's family comedy "Hotel for Dogs," it didn't exactly win me over either, although I admit it was more entertaining than the previous bunch.

Box Office: 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' reigns supreme

Weekend of January 16 – 18, 2009

Paul Blart: Mall Cop” secured the top spot at the North American box office this weekend with $33.8 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Sony’s Steve Carr-directed family comedy stars Kevin James as a devoted security guard struggling to protect his mall against a bunch of ruthless crooks. The film just fell short of surpassing the $34.2 million opening weekend gross of James’ previous big-screen comedy, “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry.”

Still going strong at No. 2 was Clint Eastwood’s drama “Gran Torino,” which earned $22.2 million for a total gross of $73.2 million after six weeks in release. Eastwood stars as a racist Korean War vet who forms an unlikely bond with a Hmong teenager living next door.

Debuting in third place with $21.9 million was Patrick Lussier’s remake “My Bloody Valentine 3-D.” The film focuses on what happens in the mining town of Harmony 10 years after a bloody Valentine’s Day massacre.

Meanwhile, Fox Searchlight’s biopic “Notorious” finished fourth with an impressive $21.5 million at 1,638 locations. The film chronicles the short life and fame of East Coast rapper Biggie Smalls, also known as Notorious B.I.G.

'Gran Torino' wins Friday box office race

Clint Eastwood's drama "Gran Torino" topped the North American box office Friday with $9.6 million in ticket sales. The film's domestic total currently stands at $20.6 million.

Debuting at No. 2 with $8.15 million was David S. Goyer's latest horror flick "The Unborn," which stars Odette Yustman as a young woman haunted by an evil spirit that wants to be born.

Closely following in third place was Gary Winick's comedy "Bride Wars," which collected $8.1 million. Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson star as two best friends who launch into a bitter feud when their weddings are booked on the same day.

Meanwhile, "Marley & Me" picked up $3.2 million at No. 4, lifting its cumulative gross to $115.5 million. David Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" pulled in $2.9 million in fifth place, reaching a total gross of $87.8 million.

Other results from Friday's box office results: "Bedtime Stories" earned $2.2 million; "Valkyrie" took home $2.1 million; Jim Carrey's "Yes Man" pulled $2 million; and new entry "Not Easily Broken" collected $1.9 million.

Review: "The Unborn"

Seen on: January 10, 2009

The players: Director: David S. Goyer, Writer: David S. Goyer, Cast: Gary Oldman, Odette Yustman, Cam Gigandet, Jane Alexander, Meagan Good

Facts of interest: Goyer also directed "The Invisible" and "Blade: Trinity."

The plot: A young woman is haunted by an unborn spirit.

Our thoughts: David S. Goyer’s “The Unborn” is an incredibly lame horror flick, and I admit I found it utterly painful to sit through the whole thing without falling asleep or wanting to leave the theater. I know it sounds bad, but this is only the year’s first official week of new releases, and we’re already off to a disappointing start.

Five funny 'The Unborn' clips

Yes, I say funny because most of these clips just made me laugh. I know they're supposed to be scary and all, but check them out for yourself and let me know what you think.

Of course, the movie in question here is David S. Goyer's upcoming horror flick "The Unborn," which stars Odette Yustman as a young woman who is hunted by an evil spirit that wants to be born, like, right now.

Sure, it all sounds ridiculous, and judging by the footage after the jump, it really is. One clip that really made me crack up is the second one, during which Yustman says, "I need an exorcism performed." Wow, what a line.

Anyway, "The Unborn" also stars Gary Oldman, Meagan Good, Jane Alexander, Cam Gigandet and Carla Gugino. The birth of the flick is scheduled for Jan. 9, 2009. I'm eager to read your reactions to these clips.

'The Unborn' international poster debuts

The folks at Empire posted the new international poster (see after the jump) for David S. Goyer's upcoming thriller "The Unborn," yet another one of those flicks in which pissed-off ghosts bother the living.

Who agrees with me that the only interesting thing about this one-sheet is probably Odette Yustman's butt? Other than that, this international version looks even crappier than the domestic poster.

In the film, Yustman plays a young woman haunted by an evil spirit that wants to be born. Sounds pretty ridiculous right?

Anyway, Gary Oldman, Cam Gigandet, Meagan Good, Jane Alexander and Carla Gugino co-star. If you dig this stuff, I'm sure you'll get your money's worth when the film opens Jan. 9, 2009.

Final word: If Yustman ("Cloverfield") runs around like this for most of the film, it may actually end up being watchable. Who knows...

New 'Unborn' pics surface on web

David S. Goyer returns to the big screen with "The Unborn," a horror thriller about a young woman (Odette Yustman) haunted by an unborn spirit. Yeah, I know it doesn't sound particularly innovative.

Anyway, a bunch of new stills from the upcoming flick surfaced on the Web this morning, and I've included some of them right here. Joblo posted the hot one above and the first one after the jump. The last one comes from ShockTillYouDrop.

Gary Oldman, Cam Gigandet, Meagan Good, Jane Alexander and Carla Gugino round out the cast. As for Goyer, he also directed the disappointing "The Invisible" and "Blade: Trinity." On a more positive note, he also worked on the story for "The Dark Knight" with Christopher Nolan.

"The Unborn" will see daylight in theaters Jan. 9, 2009.

'The Unborn' poster debuts online

The folks over at Bloody-Disgusting.com premiered the poster for David S. Goyer's upcoming horror pic "The Unborn," which, judging by its trailer, looks kind of crappy. As for the poster, it doesn't look that exciting either. The film is set to open Jan. 9, 2009.
