Box Office: 'The Expendables' stays on top

Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables" did a great job defending its No. 1 spot at the North American box office, pulling in another $16.5 million to reach a strong cumulative gross of $64.8 million.

It looked like a close race between Sly's action film and "Vampires Suck," but "The Expendables" prevailed. "Suck," however, finished second with a decent $12.2 million in estimated ticket sales.

"Vampires Suck" opened Wednesday and brought its total haul to $18.5 million after this weekend's earnings. It was followed by "Eat Pray Love," which bagged $12 million for a total haul of $47.1 million.

The remaining new entries didn't rank that high. "Lottery Ticket" debuted at No. 4 with $11.1 million, while "Piranha 3D" generated only $10 million (No. 6) and "Nanny McPhee earned $8.3 million at No. 7.

'Expendables' beats new releases at box office

It looks like Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables" is on track to top the North American box office yet again, and this despite the release of five new films this weekend. What is up with Sly and his gang?

"The Expendables" took the No. 1 spot Friday, earning another $4.9 million. Following closely in second place was "Vampires Suck," which generated $4.4 million. They will both battle it out for the weekend win.

At No. 3, new entry "Lottery Ticket" took home $3.8 million. Julia Roberts' "Eat Pray Love" dropped to fourth place, pulling in $3.7 million. Alexandre Aja's "Piranha 3D" only took $3.6 million at No. 5.

Movie Review: "The Switch"

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: August 20, 2010

The players: Directors: Josh Gordon, Will Speck, Writer: Allan Loeb, Cast: Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Jeff Goldblum, Juliette Lewis

Facts of interest: Gordon and Speck also helmed "Blades of Glory."

The plot: After Kassie announces she wants a baby, her best friend Wally accidentally spills her donor's sperm and replaces it with his own.

Our thoughts: Will Speck and Josh Gordon’s “The Switch” has a lot going for it, but in terms of story, it definitely falls a little short. I admit I walked into this film expecting a different kind of romantic comedy, but what I eventually got for my time and money was a rather superficial movie about two best friends who just don’t have what it takes to tell each other what they really feel.
