Review: "The Spirit"

Seen on: December 26, 2008

The players: Director: Frank Miller, Writer: Frank Miller, Cast: Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Sarah Paulson, Jaime King, Paz Vega

Facts of interest: Based on the graphic novels by Will Eisner.

The plot: After returning from the dead, former cop Denny Colt battles crime in Central City as the Spirit.

Our thoughts: I was really looking forward to the big-screen adaptation of Will Eisner’s graphic novel series “The Spirit,” but what I ended up seeing didn’t fulfill my expectations at all. Frank Miller’s solo directorial debut should have been an amazing ride, but in the end, it’s nothing but a boring mess that looks great but fails to entertain.

Six new but weird 'The Spirit' clips debut

Frank Miller's "The Spirit" opens this Thursday, and if you feel you just can't wait to see the movie, here are seven new clips that recently popped up over at Yahoo!

Based on the graphic novels by Will Eisner, the movie centers on rookie cop Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht), who returns from the dead to battle crime in Central City. Samuel L. Jackson plays The Octopus, one of his enemies.

Also starring are Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson, Jaime King and Sarah Paulson. Now, I don't know about you, but most of these clips just seem pretty weird to me.

Sure, while the visual style still looks attractive enough, I just can't get over how ridiculous the dialogue sounds. It all seems too rehearsed, almost laughable, and I'm not quite sure if Miller intentionally wanted it to comes across this way.

Anyway, check them out below and let me know what you think. I hope the movie as a whole is better than this.

First 'The Spirit' clip debuts online

I admit I'm quite excited about Frank Miller's upcoming "The Spirit," the anticipated adaptation of Will Eisner's comic book series.

The first clip from the flick poped up online earlier today, and you can check it out below. It follows The Spirit (Gabriel Macht) as he explains viewers why the city is always on his side during battle.

Trailers and other footage from the film have been criticized a bit around the Web for looking too much like "Sin City," but who cares? There are plenty of awesome movies out there that look very much alike.

"The Spirit" finally arrives Dec. 25, 2008. Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson, Jaime King and Samuel L. Jackson co-star. In case you have not seen it yet, check out our contest and enter for a chance to win a "Spirit Visual Companion."

Posters for 'The Spirit' and 'Ice Age 3'

Today I picked up some goodies on my poster radar. First, I have the final poster for Frank Miller's "The Spirit," which stars Gabriel Macht as a rookie cop who returns from the dead to battle crime in Central City. It looks pretty good, and you can check it out after the jump. Release date: Dec. 25, 2008.

The second poster is that of "Moon," Duncan Jones' upcoming sci-fi thriller starring Sam Rockwell as an astronaut who exeriences a personal encounter while stranded on the moon for a three-year period. I recently posted some quite interesting pics from the film, and I have to admit this one-sheet looks awesome as well.

And while I'm at it, below you'll also find the new poster for Carlos Saldanha's upcoming "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs." The third adventure of Sid, Ellie, Diego and Manny opens July 1, 2009.
