'The Dark Knight' rules at People's Choice Awards

Do you care about the People's Choice Awards? I certainly don't, but here are the winners anyway, just in case you missed the show and can't find your way to the official Web site.

"The Dark Knight" won Favorite Movie and Favorite Action Movie. The film's cast also won Favorite Cast, while Christian Bale and Heath Ledger were named Favorite Onscreen Match Up.

"27 Dresses" picked up the Favorite Comedy Movie (you're kidding, right?), while "The Secret Life of Bees" won Favorite Movie Drama and Favorite Independent Movie. "WALL-E" was named Favorite Family Movie.

Will Smith is the Favorite Male Movie Star, and Reese Witherspoon is the Favorite Female Movie Star. Also, Angelina Jolie is the Favorite Female Action Star, and Brad Pitt is the...zzzzzzzz....

This is making me sleepy. Just check out the rest of them here.

Mostly odd results I must say. Then again, why bother? These awards are not important anyway.

Box Office: 'High School Musical 3' takes No. 1

By Franck Tabouring
Weekend of October 24 – 26

Walt Disney’s “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” took center stage at the North American box office this weekend with an impressive $42 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The third installment in the popular series opened at 3,623 locations Friday, easily dominating its competition all weekend long. Starring Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, the musical follows Troy and his gang as they gear up to graduate from high school and prep for college.

Debuting in second place with $30.5 million was David Hackl’s horror sequel “Saw V,” which almost matched its predecessor’s opening weekend gross of $31.7 million. The blood-laden film follows a detective who tries to uncover the identity of the late Jigsaw’s ruthless successor.

At No. 3, John Moore’s video game adaptation “Max Payne” collected $7.6 million, lifting its domestic total to $29.6 million. Starring Mark Wahlberg, the film follows a grieving detective who struggles to hunt down those responsible for the murder of his family.

'Max Payne' leads box office into 'Saw' weekend

Usually, this time of the year really belongs to “Saw,” but this year, the latest installment in the bloody horror franchise has some serious competition: “High School Musical 3: Senior Year.”

Not only does “High School Musical” have a massive fan base, but it is also the widest release with 3,623 locations. David Hackl’s “Saw V” debuts at 3,060 sites.

Max Payne” has been clinging to the top spot of the box office all week, picking up another $978,033 Wednesday. The film’s domestic total now stands at $21.1 million.

Meanwhile, Oliver Stone’s “W.” moved up to second place, collecting $683,823 to reach a cumulative of $12.8 million. “The Secret Life of Bees” finished third with $667,519 Wednesday, bringing its total to $12.6 million.

It’s pretty safe to assume this week’s new releases will easily jump to the top of the box office chart. The “Saw” flicks usually pull in around $31 million during opening weekend, and I believe the fifth installment will keep up this tradition.

'The Secret Life of Bees' web reviews

Sue Monk Kidd's acclaimed novel "The Secret Life of Bees" arrived on the big screen this weekend, with Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys and Sophie Okoneo starring in the lead roles. You can read my review here, and if you would like to know what other Web ciritics thought about the film, see below:

Collider's Brian Orndorf: "It's impossible to invest in Lily's distress when she's a threadbare character, let loose in a screen world of ridiculous stereotypes and sun-kissed contrivance."

• At Cinematical, Kim Voynar: "The film is nicely shot, looks great, and is bolstered by a lovely score by Mark Isham..."

By Franck Tabouring
Weekend of October 17 – 19, 2008

Max Payne” topped the North American box office this weekend with $18 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Directed by John Moore, the PG-13 rated film based on the popular video game easily dominated its competition by gaining an early lead Friday. Starring Mark Wahlberg, the film follows a grieving detective who has made it his mission to avenge those responsible for his family’s murders.

Still going strong at No. 2 was last week’s box office champion “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” which collected $11.2 million to bring its domestic total to $69 million after three weeks in theaters. Walt Disney’s family adventure directed by Raja Gosnell centers on a spoiled dog ending up astray in the middle of Mexico.

Debuting in third place with $11 million this weekend was Gina Prince-Bythewood’s adaptation of “The Secret Life of Bees,” the dramatic story of a young girl finding new hope and love inside the house of an African-American family of beekeepers. Max Payne” delivered a strong performance at the North American box office Friday with $7.1 million at the No. 1 spot.

Review: "The Secret Life of Bees"

Seen on: October 18, 2008

The players: Director: Gina Prince-Bythewood, Writer: Gina Prince-Bythewood, Cast: Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Sophie Okonedo, Alicia Keys

Facts of interest: Based on the book by Sue Monk Kidd.

The plot: A young girl (Dakota Fanning) and her caregiver (Jennifer Hudson) flee to a small South Carolina town, where they find shelter with a kind-hearted African-American family of beekeepers.

Our thoughts: Sue Monk Kidd’s acclaimed novel comes to life in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Secret Life of Bees,” a comfortable but at times maybe too simplistic drama about a troubled white girl finding new hope and love inside the home of a family of African-American beekeepers.
