New DVD and Blu-ray releases - April 7, 2009

Here's what we've got on DVD and Blu-ray this week: "Doubt" with Meryl Streep; "Bedtime Stories" with Adam Sandler; "Yes Man" with Jim Carrey; "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with Keanu Reeves; "The Tale of Despereaux" and "No Country For Old Men."

DOUBT

John Patrick Shanley's big-screen adaptation of "Doubt" was one of my 10 favorite films of 2008, and I highly recommend adding this intriguing, passionate drama to your DVD collection. The cinematography of "Doubt" is not the film's strongest aspect, but excellent performances by Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis are definitely worth the investment. Plus, you can get a good deal on the standard version right here.

Last week's winner "The Day the Earth Stood Still" dropped to No. 2, earning $21 million in 92 territories and lifting its overseas total to $72.3 million. Following in third place was Catherine Hardwicke's "Twilight," which picked up another $11 million to reach a cumulative gross of $64.6 million.

Box Office: 'Yes Man' outruns 'Seven Pounds'

By Franck Tabouring
Weekend of December 19 -21, 2008

Jim Carrey’s latest comedy “Yes Man” topped the North American box office this weekend with $18.1 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

In the Peyton Reed-directed film, Carrey stars as a bitter man who decides to change his life and say yes to everything and anything. For a mainstream Carrey comedy, however, “Man” delivered an unusually low performance at the box office.

Contrary to his recent films, Will Smith’s latest drama “Seven Pounds” also failed to score a big opening, debuting with only $16 million at No. 2. Directed by Gabriele Muccino, the film follows a desperate IRS agent who embarks on a quest to forever change the lives of seven strangers.

New entry “The Tale of Despereaux” collected $10.5 million in third place. Based on the beloved book by Kate DiCamillo, the computer-animated family film tells the adventures of a brave mouse who rescues a princess from the claws of hungry rats.

'Yes Man' tops 'Seven Pounds' at box office

Jim Carrey's "Yes Man" beat Will Smith's "Seven Pounds" at the North American box office Friday with $6.4 million in ticket sales. That's an unusually low performance for a Carrey comedy.

Meanwhile, "Pounds" debuted at No. 2 with only $5.2 million, a rather disappointing result for Smith, whose films usually picked up a lot more on opening day. Following in third place was new entry "The Tale of Despereaux," which collected $3.5 million.

Down to No. 4, last week's winner "The Day the Earth Stood Still" earned $2.8 million, lifting its domestic gross to $41.3 million after a strong one-week run. Seth Gordon's holiday comedy "Four Christmases" followed at No. 5 with $2.2 million, reaching a total haul of $94.6 million.

Other results: "Twilight" ranked sixth with a daily gross of $1.6 million; "Bolt" pulled in $1 million; "Slumdog Millionaire" took home $755,000 from only 589 locations; and "Australia" finished with $625,000.

Box Office: Sci-fi remake 'Day' stills competition

By Franck Tabouring
Weekend of December 12 -14, 2008

Twentieth Century Fox’s “The Day the Earth Stood Still” destroyed its competition at the North American box office with $31 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Scott Derrickson’s remake of the 1951 sci-fi thriller directed by Robert Wise opened at 3,560 locations this weekend, landing at the No. 1 spot early Friday. The film stars Keanu Reeves as an alien travelling to Earth to warn humanity of an imminent destruction.

Last week’s box office champion “Four Christmases” dropped to second place, earning $13.2 million for a domestic total of $87.9 million after a strong three-week run. Starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, the holiday comedy follows a couple paying a visit to their four divorced parents.

At No. 3, Catherine Hardwicke’s vampire romance “Twilight” picked up another $8 million, lifting its cumulative gross to an impressive $150.1 million. The film based on the Stephenie Meyer novel of the same title tells of a teenage girl (Kristen Stewart) who falls in love with a friendly vampire (Robert Pattinson).

'The Day the Earth Stood Still' web reviews

Remakes are taking over the world of filmmaking! The latest updated version of a classic is Scott Derrickson's "The Day the Earth Stood Still," which stars Keanu Reeves, Jaden Smith and Jennifer Connelly (read my review here). Let's take a look at what the Web's critics say about it:

Cinematical's William Goss: "As a flashy big-budget distraction, 'Stood Still' is adequate overall -- rarely above, occasionally below -- and often familiar in its spectacle."

CinemaBlend's Katey Rich: "If it were just a workmanlike disaster movie, 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' might be a guilty pleasure or a fun distraction. But its cowardly treatment of the political issue at its center kills it."

• Brad Brevet at RopeOfSilicon: "In the 2008 version the story is of little consequence as long as things explode and cities are leveled."

Review: “The Day the Earth Stood Still"

Seen on: December 12, 2008

The players: Director: Scott Derrickson, Writer: David Scarpa, Cast: Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, Jaden Christopher Smith

Facts of interest: Based on 1951's "The Day the Earth Stood Still" by Robert Wise.

The plot: Keanu Reeves plays an alien tho visits Earth to warn of an ultimate destruction if the human race does not abandon all its violence and starts to take better care of the planet.

Our thoughts: A drastic drop in creativity is the only explanation I have for the massive increase in remakes we’ve seen in Hollywood over the past years. Okay, the studios’ desire to earn big bucks may be another factor, but then again, not every remake scores big at the box office, right? Other than that, I just see no reason why someone would want to rehash a film classic. It’s completely unnecessary.

Two new 'Earth Stood Still' clips pop up online

Alright, we're now only one week away from the release of Scott Derrickson's remake "The Day the Earth Stood Stil," and while I agree some footage got me a bit excited about the movie, other clips left me disappointed.

MTV recently got hold of two new clips from the sci-fi thriller, and you can check them out after the jump. In the first one, Keanu Reeves' Klaatu tells Jennifer Connelly he's only stopped by to save the planet, and not humanity.

In the second clip, Jaden Smith tells Connelly he knew his daddy quite well. Or something along those lines. I already forgot what he said because I literally dozed off while wathing this footage.

Still, I'll give this one a fair chance, although I hope the rest of the flick looks a little different than this. From wat I've heard the trailer for "Wolverine" will be attached to "Still," so there's something to look out for. The earth stand still Dec. 12, 2008.
