'Cabin in the Woods' gets an image

Chances are we will at one point be able to see Drew Goddard's horror film "The Cabin in the Woods," because the film is not dead yet. To prove it, Bloody-Disgusting posted the first image from the flick, which stars Chris Hemsworth and Bradley Whitford.

"Cabin in the Woods" was supposed to hit theaters a while ago, but MGM's recent financial trouble caused major delays. Not much is known about the plot, but it's described as "a twisted and unusual take on the familiar "cabin in the woods" formula."

Kristen Connolly, Richard Jenkins, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams and Brian White star. Looking at this still above, I keep wondering: what the hell are they all looking at? A dead monster of some sorts? A spider crawling around? A dent in the floor?

Saturday film news web roundup: Lars von Trier picks next film; Roland Emmerich talks projects

It's Saturday again, and here's a brief entry with short descriptions and links to film news we either missed or quite honestly didn't have time to add. Here's what you need to know on October 10, 2009:

• Filmmaker Lars von Trier will next write and direct a disaster film titled "Planet Melancholia." Plot details are kept under wraps, but I'm sure we're in for a visually stunning film. Trier last helmed "Antichrist." "Planet Melancholia" should be ready by the time Cannes rolls around in 2011. (The Hollywood Reporter)

• Roland Emmerich recently talked to Coming Soon about some upcoming projects, and he said he will do a film about "how it came to be that William Shakespeare was not the author of his plays." He's also planning a movie titled "Foundation," based on Isaac Asimov's series. More here.

Jenkins, Whitford pack for 'Cabin in the Woods'

Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford are packing for Drew Goddard's upcoming horror film "The Cabin in the Woods."

Here's how the Hollywood Reporter describes the project, which starts shooting soon:

"Much like 'Cloverfield,' which Goddard scripted, the 'Cabin' story line provides a new twist on a classic scenario -- in this case the young-people-stranded-in-the-woods horror trope."

No plot details have been released, but I sincerely hope the "new twist" is really new and not something we've already seen in "The Blair Witch Project." After all, that flick also served as a sort of inspiration for "Cloverfield."

Anyway, the only thing the trade added in regard to Jenkins and Whitford is that they play "white-collar co-workers with a mysterious connection to the cabin." Whatever that means.

Goddard also wrote "Cloverfield," and "Cabin" marks his directorial debut. He co-wrote this project with Joss Whedon, creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and co-creator of "Angel."

Jenkins, who delivered awesome performances in "The Visitor" and "Burn After Reading," will soon be see in "Waiting for Forever" and "Dear John." Whitford is known for his role as Josh Lyman on "The West Wing."
