'Avatar' to pass $1B worldwide this weekend!

It now looks like James Cameron's "Avatar" is passing $1 billion in earnings worldwide this weekend. I'm still waiting for more official estimates, but according to Nikki Finke, Fox's sci-fi epic adventure earned $68.3 million domestically this weekend, lifting its total gross to $352.1 million.

Adding the $670.2 million worldwide, it would bring the worldwide total for the film to $1.02 billion. Sure, 3D tickets are more expensive than regular ones, but still, for a 17-day run, this is certainly an impressive result. Getting an IMAX tickets for the film is quite a challenge in certain markets right now.

Finke also reports Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" scored $38.3 million this weekend. That brings the film's total to $140.6 million. Meanwhile, "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" picked up another $36.6 million, reaching a domestical gross of $157.3 million. Not a bad start for 2010.
