Movie Review: “I Am Number Four”

Seen on: February 18, 2011

The players: Director: D.J. Caruso, Writers: Miles Millar, Alfred Gough, Cast: Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron

Facts of interest: Produced by Michael Bay.

The plot: An alien named No. 4 is hiding from a group of ruthless monsters trying to eliminiate him and eventually take over Earth.

Our thoughts: Although it boasts quite an interesting concept, D.J. Caruso’s new sci-fi thriller “I Am Number Four” takes way too long to lift off and impress viewers with a couple of fast-paced action scenes and an explosion of solid special effects. In the end, the film feels more like a mix of “Twilight” and “Smallville,” and no, that’s definitely not a good sign. Did I also mention it was produced by Michael Bay?

First trailer for 'I Am Number Four' arrives

D.J. Caruso's next film is an alien action flick titled "I Am Number Four," and a first teaser trailer has landed online for you to check out. Watch it after the jump. It doesn't exactly look epic at this stage.

"Four" is the big-screen adaptation of the book by James Frey and Jobie Hughes. Kevin Durand, Alex Pettyfer, Teresa Palmer, Timothy Olyphant and Diana Agron star. Michael Bay is one of the producers.

The story follows nine alien teenagers who are sent to high school on Earth after their planet is destroyed. One of them (Number Four, obviously) then discovers he's targeted by a ruthless enemy from his planet.

Movie Review: "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: July 8, 2010

The players: Director: Jon Turteltaub, Writers: Matt Lopez, Doug Miro, Cast: Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina, Teresa Palmer

Facts of interest: Turteltaub also directed "National Treasure."

The plot: Cage plays a sorcerer who must train a young nerd (Baruchel) so he can use magic to defeat the world's most dangerous sorceress.

Our thoughts: Wearing long hair and a threatening black coat, Nicolas Cage runs around as a master magician in Jon Turteltaub’s new Walt Disney action adventure “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” a film that boasts solid production values but lacks the decent script that could’ve turned it into a cool big-screen experience. Instead, this chaotic movie qualifies only as a mediocre effort to entertain audiences.

Teresa Palmer has joined the cast of D.J. Caruso's upcoming film "I Am Number Four," the big-screen adaptation of the book by James Frey and Jobie Hughes. She's joining Alex Pettyfer and Sharlto Copley in the film Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg are producing. Al Gough and Miles Millar wrote the script.

The story follows nine alien teenagers who are sent to high school on Earth after their planet is destroyed. One of them then discovers he's targeted by a ruthless enemy from his planet. Heat Vision says Palmer will play Number Six, one of the aliens. Copley will play the lead character's guardian and mentor.

Palmer will soon be seen in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." She's also got "Fury Road" and "Young Americans" coming soon. Her recent credits include "Bedtime Stories" and "The Grudge 2."

New 'Mad Max' movie casting updates

I lost count of all the upcoming Hollywood projects I don't give a damn about, but one I simply don't care for is "Fury Road," the new "Mad Max" flick from George Miller, who also developed the film's predecessors.

Anyway, the movie is happening, sadly, and the Hollywood Reporter says Nicholas Hoult joins a cast that could also include Zoe Kravitz, Teresa Palmer and Adelaide Clemens. Hoult will play a guy named Nux.

Not many plot details have been released, but I hear the story takes place after 1985's "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome."Of course, Mel Gibson played the main character in the previous films.

Hoult's acting credits include "A Single Man," "The Weather Man" and of course "About a Boy," in which he played Marcus (he was a child in that flick!). He will also soon be seen in "Clash of the Titans."

Teresa Palmer joins 'Sorcerer's Apprentice'

The latest to join Nicholas Cage and Jay Baruchel in Disney's upcoming "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is actress Teresa Palmer.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Baruchel plays an apprentice who is supposed to take care of a magic workshop when a sorcerer (Cage) gives it to him.

The apprentice develops a broomstick to do all the household work for him, but chaos ensues when the broom refuses to obey. The trade says Palmer is on board as Baruchel's love interest.

Directing the whole thing is Jon Turteltaub, the guy behind the "National Treasure" flicks. Jerry Bruckheimer joins him as the producer of the project.

As for Palmer, she's currently onscreen in "Bedtime Stories." She also showed up in "The Grudge 2."
