Movie Review: “Youth in Revolt”

Youth in Revolt ReviewG.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: November 13, 2009

The players: Director: Miguel Arteta, Writer: Gustin Nash, Cast: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Jean Smart, Zach Galifianakis, Ray Liotta, Justin Long

Facts of interest: Miguel Arteta also directed "The Good Girl."

The plot: In order to win over the girl he loves, Nick creates an alter ego that teaches him how to rebel and be a bad boy.

Our thoughts: Every revolution needs a leader, and the guy getting his rebel on big time in theaters this week is Michael Cera, who turns in a superb double performance in Miguel Arteta’s “Youth in Revolt,” a surprisingly amusing comedy about a weirdo willing to do anything to win over the girl of his dreams.

Watch Michael Cera in 'Youth in Revolt' trailer

Youth in Revolt

Michael Cera is at it again in Miguel Arteta's upcoming comedy "Youth in Revolt," and a first trailer for the upcoming film has just debuted online. Check it out after the jump, because it looks intriguing. Flick is the big-screen adaptation of C.D. Payne’s novel of the same title.

"Youth in Revolt" is the irreverent story about the wild adventures of a teenage boy named Nick Twisp, who meets the girl of his dreams while on a family vacation and has to turn his life and the lives of all those around him upside down in order to be with her.

Milla Jovovich to keep ‘Coming Back’

Milla Jovovich is set to star as an alcoholic ex-stripper in “Keep Coming Back,” which marks the directorial debut of the great William H. Macy.

Described by Variety as a coming–of-age comedy, the film follows a young man who joins an AA group to seduce the woman of his dreams.

Also on board to star in the project are Macy and the great Steve Buscemi. According to the trade, the movie will head into production next year.

Macy, who’s one of my favorite actors, recently completed “The Maiden Heist” for Peter Hewitt. He also voiced one of the characters in the upcoming family adventure “The Tale of Despereaux.”

As for Jovovich, she most recently starred in “Resident Evil: Extinction.” She’s got two projects currently in post-production: “The 4th Kind” and “A Perfect Getaway.”

Short takes: Max Thieriot is a 'Prodigy'

• Max Thieriot has signed on to star as the lead in "Prodigy," a sci-fi thriller directed by Chuck Russell, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Thieriot ("Nancy Drew") plays a boarding school student who's implicated in the mysterious murders of several alumni.

Variety reports Steve Buscemi, Emily Mortimer and Tim Blake Nelson (among others) are starring in Hue Rhodes' directorial debut "Saint John of Las Vegas." Buscemi plays a former gambler who's coached by an insurance fraud investigator.

• Channing Tatum is set to star in Richie Smyth's untitled project about Parkour, an extreme sport in which fearless athletes jump from rooftops. I know there was a French flick about exactly that before, but I can't recall the title now. (Variety)

• Early numbers published by Variety indicate David Gordon Green's stoner action comedy "Pineapple Express" scored $12.1 million Wednesday. Meanwhile, "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" took home $5.7 million.
