Movie Review: “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of CobraG.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: August 7, 2009

The players: Director: Stephen Sommers, Writers: Stuart Beattie, David Elliot, Paul Lovett, Cast: Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Ray Park, Rachel Nichols

Facts of interest: Sommers also directed "The Mummy," its sequel, and "Van Helsing."

The plot: An elite team of soldiers heads out to prevent a ruthless weapons manufacturer from launching three destructive missiles.

Our thoughts: Stephen Sommers’ “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” could easily qualify as one of the year’s most ridiculous films. It’s certainly not the worst I’ve seen so far in 2009, but it’s undoubtedly one of the most incredibly absurd and mostly forgettable action flicks in recent history. On the bright side, it’s not as disastrous as it could’ve been.

I'm hungry for 'G.I. Joe' action and have an appetite for 'Julie & Julia'

Friday is approaching fast, and in anticipation of this weekend's new movie releases, here are some of my final thoughts and feelings about the new flicks before they hit theaters. On the menu this week: "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," "Julie & Julia" and "A Perfect Getaway."

Let me start with "G.I. Joe," which will certainly storm the box office and win the race without a problem. The action flick directed by Stephen Sommers opens at a solid 4,007 locations Friday, making it quite easy for the Paramount release to take the crown.

Although I used to not be excited about "Joe," the recent positive buzz surrounding the film kind of got me interested to find out what this one is all about. Earlier this week, Paramount announced critics would not get to see the flick, a move that usually involves films that suck.

This week's new movie releases - August 7, 2009

This week, we're looking at three wide releases: Stephen Sommers' "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" with Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum and Sienna Miller; Nora Ephron's "Julie & Julia" with Amy Adams and Meryl Streep; and David Twohy's thriller "A Perfect Getaway" with Timothy Olyphant and Milla Jovovich:

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA

Synopsis: From the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps, the elite G.I. JOE team uses the latest in next-generation spy and military equipment to fight the corrupt arms dealer Destro and the growing threat of the mysterious Cobra organization to prevent them from plunging the world into chaos.

First thoughts: To tell you the truth, at first I wasn't too excited about this one, but now that I've seen some cool spots and I've heard some very positive feedback from folks who've seen it already, I admit I'll walk into the film expecting a bunch of entertaining action.

New action-packed 'G.I. Joe' clips debut

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

I was just about to wrap it up for today and head to bed when I decided to check out these two new clips from Stephen Sommers' upcoming action flick "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra."

Strangely enough, I'm wild awake now, primarily because this first clip below is really action-packed. Give me a whole movie with silly action like this, and I may actually enjoy myself.

Anyway, in this first clip, Duke (Channing Tatum) chases after the Baroness (Sienna Miller). In the second clip, Duke and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) get a little accelerator suit demo.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Quaid and Byung-hun Lee co-star in the film about an elite task force trying to stop a ruthless villain. See it in theaters next week.

New 'G.I. Joe' TV spots and featurette

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

The release of Stephen Sommers' "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" is approaching fast, and new TV spots for the film practically pop up every week.

The good thing about these new spots is that they're more action-packed and a tad more entertaining than others. The bad thing is they still can't funny convince me.

Also below, check out a quick featurette with Sommers, who briefly explains what kind of scenes they filmed in downtown Paris. It's not a bad clip either.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Quaid, Sienna Miller, Marlon Wayans, Channing Tatum and Byung-hun Lee star in the film about an elite task force trying to stop a ruthless villain.

Watch: Three new 'G.I. Joe' TV spots

I admit I'm not particularly looking forward to Stephen Sommers's upcoming action flick "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" anymore, but some of these new TV spots at least look a tad better than earlier ones. (I like the one with the "American Badass" song)

Below you'll find three fast-paced spots for the flick, which opens Aug. 7, 2009. Look closely and you'll see some never-before-seen footage as well. The rest is the same stuff we've already seen, but I feel it's edited down a bit better.

Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sienna Miller , Marlon Wayans and Byung-hun Lee star, among others.

Let me know what you think about "Cobra" at this stage. Something you are excited about, or rather something you couldn't care about less? Personally, I think it all looks a little crappy.

New 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' photos hit

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

You know, the very first teaser I saw for Stephen Sommers's upcoming action flick "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" didn't look all that bad, but at this stage, I'm not sure what to think about this one.

Later spots and trailers kind of looked crappy, and that not only in terms of special effects. Somehow, the whole thing looks a little cheap. I highly doubt this one will score big at the box office, but then again, you never know.

Anyway, a bunch of new pics from the flick have surfaced online, and you can see two of them here and more at ComingSoon. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Quaid, Sienna Miller (she looks good), Marlon Wayans, Channing Tatum and Byung-hun Lee star.

Let me know what you think about "Cobra" at this stage. Something you are excited about, or rather something you couldn't care about less?

"G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" debuts Aug. 7, 2009.

French 'G.I. Joe' trailer boasts tons of new footage

I very much enjoyed the first teaser trailer for Stephen Sommers' upcoming action flick "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," but the new French trailer you can check out after the jump features tons of new (and mostly brainless but fun) footage. Sure, some of the special effects in this new preview look a little cheap, but some of those action sequences sure got me more excited about this project.

Channing Tatum, Ray Park, Dennis Quaid, Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols, Marlon Wayans, Saïd Taghmaoui and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star in the flick, which will hit theaters Aug. 7, 2009. "Cobra" focuses on a military unit’s quest to battle evil. Let me know what you think about this trailer below. I'm sure we'll also soon get to see a new domestic version.
