Here's why Nicolas Cage left 'The Green Hornet'

Nicolas Cage

Earlier this month, we found out Nicolas Cage dropped out of Michel Gondry's upcoming action adventure "The Green Hornet," but back then, it was not really clear why so. The only thing we knew was that Cage failed to reach a proper deal with Columbia. There was more to it though, and Cage now revealed what happened.

Hurrah! Christoph Waltz boards 'Green Hornet'

Christoph Waltz

After delivering what I believe is easily one of the year's best performance as nasty Col. Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," Austrian actor Christoph Waltz is now set to play the bad guy in Michel Gondry's upcoming "The Green Hornet."

Nicolas Cage was supposed to play the villain in the crime adventure, but he recetly dropped out. Variety says Waltz will play Chudnofsky, a Los Angeles crime lord who tries to bring together a number of gangs to form his own criminal force.

Nicolas Cage no longer part of 'Green Hornet'

Back in July, Nicolas Cage entered negotiations to play the villain in Michel Gondry's "The Green Hornet," but as we learn from Heat Vision, he's now no longer involved with the film, which has already started shooting.

Not many details have been released, but apparently, Columbia and Cage failed to seal a proper deal. That means they're now looking for a new guy to play the baddie.

Seth Rogen talks 'Green Hornet' release delay

Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen's upcoming action film "The Green Hornet" encountered several casting troubles during the past couple of months, but those problems are now a thing of the past. On the other hand, the Michel Gondry-directed project has recently been delayed five months.

"Hornet" was set to open in July 2010, but the film's release date has now been changed to Dec. 17, 2010. No reason for panic though, because this shift doesn't mean the project is in trouble again. In fact, Seth Rogen, who co-wrote the film and will play the lead character, welcomed the switch.

Jay Chou to play Kato in 'The Green Hornet'

Jay Chou

Actor Jay Chou has officially signed on to star as Kato in Michel Gondry’s upcoming big-screen adventure "The Green Hornet," Columbia Pictures announced Friday.

“It’s an overwhelming experience to take on a role made famous by Bruce Lee," Chou said. "I won’t try to be Bruce Lee’s Kato – I will try to bring my own interpretation to the part."

Written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the film follows the adventures of Britt Reid, who inherits his dad's newspaper and fights crime as a masked hero at night.

Stephen Chow was originally set to play Kato, Reid's sidekick, but he recently dropped out. As for Chou, he's a celebrated pop artist in Taiwan. He also starred opposite Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li in "The Curse of the Golden Flower."

'Funny People' web reviews

A scene from Funny People

"Funny People" marks Judd Apatow's third directorial effort, and it stars Seth Rogen, Adam Sandler, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill, Leslie Mann and Jason Schwartzman. Here's what some of the Web's critics have to say about the drama-comedy:

• Katey Rich @ CinemaBlend: "The best we can hope for is that Funny People is a necessary middle ground between Apatow's adolescent experiment and the more adult stories he has yet to tell."

RopeOfSilicon's Brad Brevet: "Apatow's ability to keep me curious as to where he was going to take things next was this film's saving grace in my case."

LatinoReview's Ron Henriques: "Though the third act is problematic, 'Funny People' works when Sandler and Rogan are either interacting humorously or discussing gag material and the nature of comedy."

Movie Review: “Funny People”

Funny People ReviewThe Collector

Seen on: July 31, 2009

The players: Director: Judd Apatow, Writer: Judd Apatow, Cast: Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill, Jason Schwartzman

Facts of interest: Apatow also directed "Knocked Up" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin."

The plot: A stand-up comedian has a near-death experience that will prompt him to change his life and look at things from a different perspective.

Our thoughts: I wouldn’t go as far and call Judd Apatow’s “Funny People” one of the year’s best, but as a dramatic comedy carefully examining the impact a near-death experience has on a desperate stand-up comedian, the film works marvelously. “People” may not be Apatow’s most entertaining project, but it sure is as sincere as his previous efforts.

This week's new movie releases - July 31, 2009

This week, we're looking at three wide releases: Judd Apatow's comedy "Funny People" with Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and Eric Bana; John Schultz's "Aliens in the Attic" with Ashley Boettcher and Austin Robert Butler; and Marcus Dunstan's horror pic "The Collector":

Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler in Funny People

FUNNY PEOPLE

Synopsis: In the film by Judd Apatow, Adam Sandler stars as George Simmons, a standup comedian whose life changes after he has a near-death experience.

First thoughts: So far, I've enjoyed most of Apatow's flicks, and judging by its trailers and TV spots, "Funny People" looks like a heartfelt comedy with tons of refreshing humor and solid performances. I'm glad to see Sandler back in a role that actually doesn't look retarded. This is definitely my first pick for the weekend.

Nicolas Cage to be the bad guy in 'Green Hornet'?

Nicolas Cage is in early negotiatons to play the bad guy in Columbia's upcoming "The Green Hornet," which Michel Gondry will direct.

The film follows the adventures of Britt Reid, who inherits his dad's newspaper and fights crime as a masked hero at night. Seth Rogen plays the lead character, and Cameron Diaz is in talks to play his love interest.

The studio is also looking for someone to play Reid's sidekick Kato. Stephen Chow was originally set for the role, but he dropped out recently.

I don't know about you, but I think Rogen going after Cage could actually be funny. Give Cage one of those terrible wigs and he's all set to play a convincing villain.

Evan Goldberg and Rogen penned the script for the flick, which is set for release next year. Cage's upcoming credits include "Kick-Ass," "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."
