Interview with Scott Hicks, director of 'The Boys Are Back'

Scott Hicks

I recently had the chance to sit down and talk to filmmaker Scott Hicks, whose credits include "Shine," "Hearts in Atlantis" and more recently, "No Reservations" and "Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts." Hicks' new film "The Boys Are Back" is currently playing in theaters, and here's what it's about:

It follows Clive Owen as a witty, wisecracking, action-oriented sportswriter who, in the wake of his wife's tragic death, finds himself in a sudden, stultifying state of single parenthood. Here is what Hicks had to say about how the film came together and what it was like working with Owen and two young actors...

Movie Review: “The Boys Are Back”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: October 1, 2009

The players: Director: Scott Hicks, Writer: Allan Cubitt, Cast: Clive Owen, Laura Fraser, Emma Booth, George MacKay, Nicholas McAnulty

Facts of interest: Scott Hicks recently directed "No Reservations."

The plot: The film follows a father who must raise his two boys alone after his wife passes away.

Our thoughts: Chances are, Scott Hicks’ excellent new drama “The Boys Are Back” will bring you to tears during the first 15 minutes. The film doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to establishing its tragic story line, which is exactly why it successfully captured my full attention in no time. That’s a strong start for a strong, very touching big-screen experience.

Clive Owen in powerful 'Boys Are Back' trailer

The Boys Are Back with Clive Owen

Clive Owen stars in Scott Hicks' upcoming drama "The Boys Are Back," and a new trailer for the film has recently debuted online. Check it out after the jump; it's a powerful one.

Based on the novel by Simon Carr, the film follows a witty, wisecracking, action-oriented sportswriter who, in the wake of his wife's tragic death, finds himself in a sudden, stultifying state of single parenthood.

Tommy Bastow, Laura Fraser, George MacKay, Emma Booth, Natasha Little and Erik Thomson co-star in the film, which will hit limited release Sept. 25, 2009.

Hicks’ directing credits include “Hearts in Atlantis,” “No Reservations” and “Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts.” Allan Cubitt adapted Carr's novel. Looks good. It's definitely one I will be looking for this fall.

Miramax to release ‘Boys Are Back’

Miramax Films picked up the rights to distribute Scott Hicks’ drama “The Boys Are Back,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Adapted by Allan Cubitt from Simon Carr’s novel “The Boys Are Back in Town,” the plot centers on a widower (Owen) trying to raise his two sons.

"I had been wanting to continue the relationship with Scott Hicks I had started so long ago on 'Shine,' " Miramax’s Daniel Battsek told THR.

Hicks’ directing credits include “Hearts in Atlantis,” “No Reservations” and “Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts.”

As for Owen, he recently starred in “Shoot ‘Em Up” and “Elizabeth: The Golden Age.” He will next be seen in Tom Tykwer’s “The International.”
