Watch: Trailer for 'The Darkest Hour'

Here is the new trailer for Summit Entertainment's upcoming flick "The Darkest Hour," which opens Dec. 23, 2011. The Chris Gorak-directed sci-fi thriller stars Emile Hirsch as one of a few humans trying to survive a nasty alien invasion. See below.

The concept behind "Hour" looks pretty interesting, with the aliens arriving in some sort of electrical form that feeds off energy. These forces can see humans, but humans can't see them, which raises the stakes, obviously. Cool, huh?

Whether the 3D film will blow our minds; we'll have to wait until the end of the year. At this point, all I can say is that the trailer won over my attention. Olivia Thirlby, Rachael Taylor and Max Minghella co-star, and Timur Bekmambetov produced.

'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' bags $37M

Paramount's "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" jumped to the top of the North American box office Wednesday, earning a solid $37.3 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates. The film scored the biggest opening day so far this year.

Michael Bay's crazy 3D sequel, however, failed to beat the stellar performance of its predecessor, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." That sequel took home a strong $62 million. "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" is now playing at 4,011 locations.

Needless to say, the third film in the franchise will make a lot of moola this weekend, and it will probably rank somewhere between the first "Transformers" and "Revenge of the Fallen." Wednesday midnight showings, by the way, only brought in $8 million.

Movie Review: "Super 8"

Seen on: June 7, 2011

The players: Director: J.J. Abrams, Writer: J.J. Abrams, Cast: Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich

Facts of interest: Regular Abrams composer Michael Giacchino did the music for “Super 8” and also appears as one of the Sheriff’s deputies.

The plot: A group of young teens in Middle America circa 1979 are making a monster movie when they are caught up in a mysterious adventure.

Our thoughts: Since its teaser trailer was released almost a year ago, “Super 8” has set the movie community abuzz with speculation about its story. This brilliant marketing tool generated massive hype without ever giving away any idea of what the film would eventually be about, leaving audiences with unfortunately lofty expectations, a ploy that rarely works in these days of reconstituted cinematic garbage.  That said, “Super 8” pulls off a phenomenal feat: it lives up to the promotional ballyhoo.

Another great clip from J.J. Abrams' 'Super 8'

Super 8 new clip

A few weeks ago, we got a good sneak peek at that train accident scene from J.J. Abrams' anticipated sci-fi adventure "Super 8," and now, we're in for a new clip that includes more of that specific moment. Check it out right after the jump.

Now, I have not seen a single Abrams flick with a badly executed scene, and I don't think "Super 8" will be an exception. This just looks stunning. The cast includes Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso, and Noah Emmerich.

The story follows a group of friends in the summer of 1979, as they begin noticing strange happenings going around in their small town, and begin to investigate into the creepy phenomenon. "Super 8" starts June 10, 2011. Yay!

New 'Super 8' clip looking great

Super 8 looks freaking fantastic

J. J. Abrams' highly-anticipated sci-fi action flick "Super 8" will open in theaters everywhere June 10, 2011, and the folks over at Yahoo! just debuted a brand-new clip from the film produced by Steven Spielberg. As expected, the footage here looks absolutelty fantastic. Check it out after the jump.

No, no big monster in this clip, but it does offer a good preview of the event that unleashes mayhem in the film. Abrams' stuff always looks great, but just looking it at this from a visual point of view, it's simply gorgeous. The cast includes Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka and Kyle Chandler.

Movie Review: “I Am Number Four”

Seen on: February 18, 2011

The players: Director: D.J. Caruso, Writers: Miles Millar, Alfred Gough, Cast: Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron

Facts of interest: Produced by Michael Bay.

The plot: An alien named No. 4 is hiding from a group of ruthless monsters trying to eliminiate him and eventually take over Earth.

Our thoughts: Although it boasts quite an interesting concept, D.J. Caruso’s new sci-fi thriller “I Am Number Four” takes way too long to lift off and impress viewers with a couple of fast-paced action scenes and an explosion of solid special effects. In the end, the film feels more like a mix of “Twilight” and “Smallville,” and no, that’s definitely not a good sign. Did I also mention it was produced by Michael Bay?

Cool new poster for 'Battle: Los Angeles'

Jonathan Liebesman's upcoming action sci-fi blockbuster is one of a few major flicks I'm looking forward to this year, and the folks at IGN just posted a pretty awesome new poster for the alien invasion movie, which opens in theaters March 11, 2011 and stars Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez, among others.

You can admire the one-sheet below. The plot centers on a Marine platoon’s battle against alien invaders in Los Angeles. Bridget Moynahan and Michael Peña co-star, and everything I've seen so far of this looks pretty cool. That said, "Battle: L.A." will have a tough job trying to prove it's got what it takes to match "District 9."

Scarlett Johansson will play sext alien chick

Scarlett Johansson will pay an attractive alien woman in Jonathan Glazer's upcoming sci-fi drama "Under the Skin," which will go into production next year. No kidding. This already sounds pretty intriguing.

THR says Glazer wrote the script with Walter Campbell. Johansson's character "scours remote highways and desolate scenery looking to use her greatest weapon to snare human prey -- her voracious sexuality."

Convinced? "She is deadly efficient, but over time becomes drawn to and changed by the complexity of life on earth." Sexy Johansson ("Iron Man 2") will also show up as Black Widow in "The Avengers."

Watch this action-packed clip from 'Skyline'

Skyline clip

The folks at Yahoo! Movies today posted a brand-new clip from Colin Strause and Greg Strause's sci-fi thriller "Skyline," and I highly suggest you check it out below. It's quite an intense action sequence...

"Skyline" happens to be one of only a few films I'm really looking forward this season, which is why I'm super excited the film opens Nov. 12, 2010. I've been continually impressed by what I've seen of it so far.

In the film, strange lights descend on Los Angeles, drawing people outside like moths to a flame where an extraterrestrial force threatens to swallow the entire human population off the face of the earth.

Steven Spielberg to next direct 'Robopocalypse'

Steven Spielberg, the one man who can direct like three films at the same time, has just picked his next major project: the big-screen adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson's upcoming sci-fi novel "Robopocalypse."

Deadline says Drew Goddard ("Cloverfield," "The Cabin in the Woods") has already written the script, which Spielberg will direct in 2012. Touchstone Pictures will prep the film for a release 2013.

Wilson's anticipated novel follows the human race's attempt to survive an apocalypse triggered by robots. Sounds a bit familiar, but what the hell... Spielberg knows how to pick solid projects, so I trust him.
