Movie Review: “Pandorum”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: September 27, 2009

The players: Director: Christian Alvart, Writer: Travis Milloy, Cast: Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Cam Gigandet, Norman Reedus, Cung Le

Facts of interest: Christian Alvart also directed "Case 39."

The plot: Two members of a spacecraft crew wake up on board and have no clue who they are and what's going on...

Our thoughts: Walk into “Pandorum” with low expectations, and you may be pleasantly surprised. No, Christian Alvart’s sci-fi horror flick is by no means a masterpiece, but it boasts a series of atmospheric scenes and scary moments I found quite enjoyable to watch. In other words, “Pandorum” is not a complete disaster.

Movie Review: “Knowing”

Seen on: March 22, 2009

The players: Director: Alex Proyas, Writers: Ryne Douglas Pearson, Stiles White, Juliet Snowden, Cast: Nicolas Cage, Rose Byrne, Chandler Canterbury, Ben Mendelsohn

Facts of interest: Proyas also helmed "I, Robot" and "Dark City."

The plot: Cage stars as a professor who thinks he's connected to a series of events leading to a global disaster that could be detrimental to the world.

Our thoughts: Science and religion collide again on the big screen in Alex Proyas’ latest sci-fi thriller “Knowing,” in which Nicholas Cage makes a shocking discovery and tries everything in his power to prevent the end of humanity. It’s definitely not a terrible flick, but I did come across several aspects I simply couldn’t appreciate.

Catherine Hardwicke to direct 'Maximum Ride'?

Catherine Hardwicke is in talks to direct Columbia's big-screen version of James Patterson’s best-selling novel series “Maximum Ride."

The story focuses on six kids who underwent genetic modification to be 98 percent human and 2 percent bird. After escaping from the laboratories they’re held at, the children are pursued by a gang of werewolves sent to track them down.

Don Payne, screenwriter of “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” and “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” is writing the script.

Columbia is eyeing an entire franchise if this film succeeds. No word on how many films the studio is planning at this stage.

Hardwicke last directed Summit's "Twilight," but she won't return for the sequel, "New Moon." Her credits also include "Thirteen" and "Lords of Dogtown."

Scott Derrickson to direct 'Hyperion Cantos'

Scott Derrickson has signed on to direct "Hyperion Cantos" for Warner Bros. and GK Films.

Variety says the film is based on Dan Simmons' sci-fi novels "Hyperion" and "The Fall of Hyperion."

The trade describes the plot as follows:

"Story is set in the distant future, as a space war threatens Hyperion, a planet known for the Time Tombs -- large artifacts that can move through time and are guarded by a gruesome monster called the Shrike."

Interesting. Trevor Sands, who wrote and directed 2002's "Inside," is penning the adaptation. He also recently adapted David Brin's novel "Startide Rising."

Derrickson most recently directed the remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still." His credits also include "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and "Hellraiser: Inferno."

One of Derrickson's upcoming projects is "Paradise Lost," based on John Milton's epic poem.

Revised 'Star Trek' trailer debuts online

"Star Trek" fans were in for a big surprise today after a revised trailer popped up online with a tiny bit of new footage.

You can check out the preview after the jump. It's basically the same trailer we've already seen, with the exception of a brief new scene at 1 minute and 48 seconds.

Okay, are you ready? It's Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock! He only speaks a few words here, but it's still a pretty cool moment.

This new reboot is directed by J.J. Abrams, and the plot chronicles the early days of Kirk and his crew on the Enterprise. Chris Pine, Eric Bana, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana co-star.

Brand-new 'Star Trek' trailer has landed!

Some of you may have already caught it on YouTube somewhere as a bootleg version, but now the new 'Star Trek" trailer is available in excellent quality. Check it out right after the jump.

This new reboot is directed by J.J. Abrams, and the plot chronicles the early days of Kirk and his crew on the Enterprise. Chris Pine, Eric Bana, Simon Pegg, Winona Ryder, Zoe Saldana, Kalr Urban, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Bruce Greenwood and Leonard Nimoy star.

I am by no means a "Star Trek" expert, and I can't say I'm a die-hard fan, so it's almost impossible for me to judge this new, explosive trailer. As someone who doesn't know all that much about the franchise, the only thing I can say is that it looks like an action-loaded extravaganza with great special effects.

So, all you experts out there, enlighten me. What do you think about this trailer, and do you think this looks like a real "Star Trek" flick to you? Sound off below.

Trailer radar: 'Push'

Here's something cool to watch out for: Paul McGuigan's upcoming sci-fi action flick "Push," about a group of people with extraordinary abilities.

Chris Evans can move objects with his mind, Dakota Fanning can see the future, and Camilla Belle can read people's thoughts. Unfortunately, these unique individuals are followed by Division, an organization that plans to turn them into war machines.

The plot sounds cool, the footage in the trailer looks great, and I can't wait to see how the whole thing turns out. I know it sounds like an episode of "Heroes" for the big screen, but this could have the potential to entertain big time.

Check out the trailer right after the jump. By the way, McGuigan also directed "Lucky Number Slevin."
