Wow! This first preview definitely delivers the goods. It looks gorgeous, it looks creepy, it looks suspenseful, and above all, it looks incredibly intriguing.

Two images from 'The Lovely Bones' debut online

This is the first image from Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones

I love Empire, I really do, but their latest efforts to promote their site is a liiiiiitle exaggerated. Sure, links and logos should be slapped on exclusive photos and all, but the image you see above isn't really an image anymore. It's more of a logo, really. Anyway, it's supposed to be a still from Peter Jackson's upcoming big-screen adaptation of Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones."

The film stars Saoirse Ronan (pictured above) as a young girl who's murdered and watches her family and her killer from heaven. Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Stanley Tucci and Susan Sarandon co-star. After the jump, you can also check out Tucci in a photo released by the folks at USA Today. "Bones" hits Dec. 11, 2009.

Sturgess, Ronan to join Weir's 'Way Back'

Jim Sturgess and Saoirse Ronan are in talks to star in Peter Weir's fact-based drama "The Way Back." Colin Farrell and Ed Harris are in negotiations as well.

Written by Weir and based on the book by Slavomir Ravich, the film centeres on a group of soldiers who escaped from a Siberian gulag in 1940.

Variety offered some new information about who's playing who. Farrell is set to star as a tattooed Russian, while Harris is on board to play an American. Sturgess plays a Polish inmate, with Ronan starring as a Russian on the run.

Shooting is scheduled to start in March, with the film set for release in 2011. Weir, who has been nominated for six Oscars so far, also directed "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," "The Truman Show" and "Dead Poets Society."

Sturgess recently starred in "21." He will soon be seen in Wayne Kramer's drama "Crossing Over." As for Ronan, she was last seen in "City of Ember." She recently wrapped filming for "The Lovely Bones."

Review: “City of Ember”

Seen on: October 11, 2008

The players: Director: Gil Kenan, Writer: Caroline Thompson, Cast: Bill Murray, Toby Jones, Saoirse Ronan, Tim Robbins, Martin Landau, Harry Treadaway

Facts of interest: Based on the book by Jeanne Duprau.

The plot: Two youngsters (Ronan and Treadaway) must save an entire underground city before the lights go out and darkness thrusts everyone into panic.

Our thoughts: While Gil Kenan’s “City of Ember” fails to qualify as an extraordinary family adventure, the film boasts enough energy and excitement to captivate younger audiences from start to finish. You can hate me for saying this, but this kind of films turns out to be more constructive than your average animated flick in which talking animals keep doing the same stuff over and over again.

Cinematical's Jette Kernion: "Caroline Thompson's script gives us strong main characters and entertaining supporting characters, but is a little light on story."

• Brian Orndorf at Collider: "'City of Ember' is a sci-fi fantasy film with forbidding apocalyptic overtones, extravagant set design, and an edge that mixes high-flying questing with significant ecological worry."
