What is Roland Emmerich up to?

Studios are currently abuzz about a new sci-fi script penned by big budget disaster director Roland Emmerich ("Godzilla," "2012," "The Day After Tomorrow"). While very little is known about the project other than its working title "Singularity," Deadline tells us that Sony is going to soon announce its aquisition of the property.

Even though it seems that the director is throwing a monkey wrench into his career as a disaster filmmaker with his upcoming Shakespeare drama "Anonymous," I think it is safe to assume that Emmerich will return to his winning formula with this new sci-fi film.

Which brings me to a little game I would like to play. Based on the title, what do you think the film will be about? Please let us know in the comments below.

My guess: It is the year 4026 and a singular and momentous event threatens to annihilate the human race. Due to the world's inability to stop global warming, the Sun is on a collision course with Earth.

As the people of earth are engaged in a brutal civil war, they must set aside their differences and band together to build a space shield that will not only stop the sun from plummeting into the Earth, but also use the Sun's energy to energize the Earth for years to come.

Movie Review: “2012”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: November 13, 2009

The players: Director: Roland Emmerich, Writers: Roland Emmerich, Harald Kloser, Cast: John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt

Facts of interest: None, really.

The plot: As the world comes to an end in the year 2012, a group of brave people try to survive the cataclysms surrounding them.

Our thoughts: Roland Emmerich’s latest apocalyptic big-screen spectacle works best as a comedy. The film boasts a number of excellent laughs, and that’s the main reason I found it moderately enjoyable. Other than that, it’s nothing more than yet another utterly ridiculous, overblown sci-fi action piece about the end of the world.

New clip from Emmerich's '2012' debuts online

2012

A brand-new clip from Roland Emmerich's upcoming apocalyptic action spectacle "2012" has debuted online, and it features John Cusack and Woody Harrelson sharing a little chat. Check it out after the jump.

The film focuses on a little group of people struggling with the large-scale cataclysm ensuing from the end of the world in 2012. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover and Amanda Peet co-star.

No, you won't get to see any big action or destruction in this short clip, but you get a funny Woody Harrelson telling and showing Cusack's character he knows the big apocalypse is coming for sure.

What's up with 'Independence Day 2'?

Master destroyer Roland Emmerich wants to do another "Independence Day," but apparently, it's not that easy to get the ball rolling on a sequel to the 1996 sci-fi hit flick, which bagged $817 million worldwide.

Emmerich is currently out promoting his new action film "2012," and the guys at Latino Review asked the filmmaker about the status of a potential second "ID4." Right now, things don't look all that great.

Emmerich said he and Dean Devlin are ready to develop the project, but Fox is having issues working out the filmmakers' and Will Smith's deals. And, of course, you can't have "ID4" without Will, right?

Saturday film news web roundup: Lars von Trier picks next film; Roland Emmerich talks projects

It's Saturday again, and here's a brief entry with short descriptions and links to film news we either missed or quite honestly didn't have time to add. Here's what you need to know on October 10, 2009:

• Filmmaker Lars von Trier will next write and direct a disaster film titled "Planet Melancholia." Plot details are kept under wraps, but I'm sure we're in for a visually stunning film. Trier last helmed "Antichrist." "Planet Melancholia" should be ready by the time Cannes rolls around in 2011. (The Hollywood Reporter)

• Roland Emmerich recently talked to Coming Soon about some upcoming projects, and he said he will do a film about "how it came to be that William Shakespeare was not the author of his plays." He's also planning a movie titled "Foundation," based on Isaac Asimov's series. More here.

Crazy action-packed 5-minute scene from '2012'

Scene from 2012

John Cusack is the best driver and luckiest bastard you'll ever get to see on the big screen. I mean, this guy drives a limo across Los Angeles as the entire city is being destroyed. Don't believe me? See below!

A five-minute clip from Roland Emmerich's upcoming apocalyptic action flick "2012" debuted on TV today, and the clip is now online. It's incredibly ridiculous, folks, but somehow, it's also somewhat entertaining.

Three new posters for Emmerich's '2012'

Roland Emmerich is putting an end to the world yet again in "2012," his latest apocalyptic action spectacle that we'll get to see in theaters Nov. 13, 2009. Just yesterday we got a look at a new Japanese trailer with plenty of new footage from the film, and today, I've found three new posters via Yahoo!

As you can see after the jump, they show an awful amount of destruction. Bye bye Los Angeles, bye bye White House and see ya Rio de Janeiro. As usual, keep in mind that fancy posters and spectacular trailers don't mean we're in for a fantastic Emmerich film. His couple of previous ones kind of sucked.
