‘RoboCop’ will return to big screen!

“RoboCop” will return to the big screen in the near future, and according to the Hollywood Reporter, Darren Aronofsky is set to direct what is currently known as a new installment in the franchise.

No details about the plot have been announced yet, but “Road to Perdition” screenwriter David Self is on board to pen the script. MGM is aiming for a 2010 release.

The original “RoboCop” was directed by Paul Verhoeven and hit theaters in 1987. The story centered on a Detroit cop who is transformed into a powerful cyborg and programmed to battle crime in the city.

Aronofsky recently directed “The Fountain.” His is currently wrapping post-production on “The Wrestler,” which stars Mickey Rourke as professional wrestler Randy “The Ram” Robinson.

Although I feel the studios are currently remaking too many classics and rebooting too many old franchises, I have to admit I’m pretty excited about this. I’ve been waiting for Aronofsky to get a shot at tackling a blockbuster with a huge budget, and I’m eager to see how he brings the powerful robot cop back to life.
