'Piranha 3D' producer fires back at James Cameron

Okay, so "Avatar" director James Cameron is out there crying because other folks are shooting in 3D and are having a blast creating films in which all sorts of things are being thrown into spectators' faces.

Let me back up. In a recent Vanity Fair interview, Cameron spoke out publicly against "Piranha 3-D," calling it "an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D." Yeah, he wasn't particularly nice about it.

Now, "Piranha 3-D" producer Mark Canton is firing back, and you can read his incredibly long response below. I don't care about this silly feud at all, but I admit it's still quite amusing to see these guys fight.

'Piranha 3D' gets a sequel already

Alexandre Aja's "Piranha 3D" didn't exactly explode at the box office, but it made enough money for Dimension Films to go ahead and announce a sequel. And yes, many critics actually praised the film...

“We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving PIRANHA 3D, but cheering for it. And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it," said producer Mark Canton.

No other details have been released at this point. "Piranha 3D" is now playing, and it stars Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O'Connell, Jessica Szohr, Steven R. McQueen, Eli Roth, Adam Scott and Kelly Brook.

'Expendables' beats new releases at box office

It looks like Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables" is on track to top the North American box office yet again, and this despite the release of five new films this weekend. What is up with Sly and his gang?

"The Expendables" took the No. 1 spot Friday, earning another $4.9 million. Following closely in second place was "Vampires Suck," which generated $4.4 million. They will both battle it out for the weekend win.

At No. 3, new entry "Lottery Ticket" took home $3.8 million. Julia Roberts' "Eat Pray Love" dropped to fourth place, pulling in $3.7 million. Alexandre Aja's "Piranha 3D" only took $3.6 million at No. 5.

Movie Review: "Piranha 3D"

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: August 20, 2010

The players: Director: Alexandre Aja, Writers: Pete Goldfinger, Josh Stolberg, Cast: Steven R. McQueen, Jerry O'Connell, Kelly Brook, Elisabeth Shue

Facts of interest: Aja also helmed "The Hills Have Eyes."

The plot: Ruthless piranhas invade a lake taken over by college folks celebrating Spring Break. So yeah... hell breaks loose.

Our thoughts: Boobs! Boobs! They’re all over Alexandre Aja’s “Piranha 3D,” a mostly entertaining but still utterly moronic horror flick that features tons of weird CGI killer fish turning hot bodies into countless mutilated corpses. No, it’s not exactly a disastrous flick, but then again, it’s not a masterpiece either. It’s nothing but silly summer fun that does the job but could in fact be a whole lot better.

Pretty cool international 'Piranha 3-D' poster!

Foreign posters for American films often look a lot better than the domestic versions, and here's another one to prove my point: the French one-sheet for Alexandre Aja's upcoming horror remake "Piranha 3-D."

As you can see after the jump, it's got a very cool "Jaws" vibe to it, and it's easily better than the crappy North American poster. I've attached it below as well so you can compare and make up your own mind.

The ruthless CGI fish will start swimming straight into your face in theaters Aug. 20, 2010. Adam Scott, Elisabeth Shue, Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss and Jerry O'Connell star.

Hungry 'Piranha 3D' poster debuts

A brand-new poster for Alexandre Aja's upcoming 3D horror flick "Piranha 3-D" has debuted online, and you can see it in full below. It's got sharp teeth, but that's it. In my book, it's a pretty boring poster.

New feature trailer for 'Piranha 3D' debuts

You know, if we get lucky, we may get some good laughs out of Alexandre Aja's upcoming 3D horror flick "Piranha 3-D." At least that's what the new feature trailer promises in a way. Check it out after the jump and see for yourself, but I find it hard to take this seriously. CG Piranhas flying in your face? Ha-ha...

Anyway, this trailer gives us a better look at the hungry fish, which threaten the Spring Break population of Lake Victoria after a sudden underwater tremor. Yep, those Piranhas will totally bite some drunken students in the butt, and my guess is it will be quite a bloddy show as well. Let's hope it will be amusing.

Here's your dose of film news for April 13, 2009:

Daily news dose: Naomi Watts joins Allen film; Seyfried to join 'Sucker'?

Here's your daily news dose for Feb. 23, 2009:

• Naomi Watts is the latest to join Woody Allen's latest film, which is currently untitled. Also on board are Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins. Plot details, as usual, are kept under wraps for now. Watts can currently be seen onscreen in "The International." (Variety)

• The folks at IESB sat down and talked to Zack Snyder about his upcoming flick "Sucker Punch," which is about to head into pre-production. According to Snyder, he's in talks with Amanda Seyfried to join the cast. By the way, the tagline over at IMDb describes the film as "'Alice in Wonderland' with machine guns." Whoa!

• John Cusack, Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson have apparently joined the cast of Sean Anders and John Morris' upcoming comedy "Hot Tub Time Machine," about a group of adults who visit a hot tub they once used and realize it can transport them back in time, to their younger selves. (Joblo)

• Alexandre Aja's "Piranha 3-D" will come, for sure, but you may have to wait for it a little longer. Filming on the remake Joe Dante's 1978 film has been delayed, and Aja recently told MTV News why: “We pushed production back to spring for weather reasons and location reasons.” Yeah, the weather's a sucker indeed!

Ready for some 'Piranha' action in 3D?

Alexandre Aja is currently working on his next film "Piranha 3-D," a remake of Joe Dante's 1978 film of the same title (but without the 3D).

The writer/director recently talked to the folks at ShockTillYouDrop, and here's what he had to say about the development of the flick:

"I'm finishing storyboards now and using the time to improve the script to get the best action and story gags as possible."

Referring to the concept you can see above, he went on: "That's one of the concepts. There are many because, visually, they'll be different. Like 'Gremlins' not all of the piranha will be the same."

Aja also confirmed he'll start shooting "Piranha 3-D" this year, although a release date has not yet been set.

I can only hope the film will look as awesome as "My Bloody Valentine 3-D." Having different piranha jump at you sounds like fun.
