Greengrass to direct Somali Pirate drama

Paul Greengrass, director of films such as "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "United 93," has begun negotiations to direct the pirate drama "Maersk Alabama." The film will be based on the memoirs of Captain Richard Phillips, a hero of the high seas whose ship was overtaken by Somali pirates. Tom Hanks is set to star.

There should be no scheduling conflicts as Greengrass' plans to make a Martin Luther King Jr. biopic recently fell through. I was a huge fan of "United 93" and am sure that Greengrass will make a great film out of this material. This will be his first film since last year's excellent war thriller "Green Zone." Movie Review: “Green Zone”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: March 9, 2010

The players: Director: Paul Greengrass, Writer: Brian Helgeland, Cast: Matt Damon, Amy Ryan, Greg Kinnear, Brendan Gleeson

Facts of interest: None.

The plot: A military man who is sent to look for WMDs in Iraq gets suspicious of the U.S. government when he comes up empty.

Our thoughts: Paul Greengrass’ war thriller “Green Zone” is an incredibly fast-paced action flick that kidnapped my full attention from the start and kept me ensnared until the very end. It’s an experience that will certainly draw a bunch of hate from some cinemagoers, but in my book, it delivers the goods and doesn’t blow any smoke about the messages it wants to convey.

Paul Greengrass won't do fourth 'Bourne' film

I love Paul Greengrass' films, and I was looking forward to him helming another "Bourne" flick, but according to The Playlist, the filmmaker won't return to direct another Jason Bourne installment. Bummer.

The project is quite messy, apparently, as two scripts are circling around and nothing has been decided on yet. George Nolfi wrote one, and Joshua Zetumer wrote another one, but no one consulted Greengrass.

The Playlist also points out that Greengrass' upcoming action flick "Green Zone" cost way much more money Universal wanted to spend. This could be another reason for his departure. He's too expensive.

Action-packed trailer for 'Green Zone' hits!

Matt Damon in Green Zone trailer

Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon return to big-screen action in "Green Zone," and as this new trailer for the film suggests, it pretty much looks like a Jason Bourne flick taking place in Iraq during the war.

Still, as you can see below, "Zone" looks action-packed and intense, and as long as it's as original and vibrant as the Bourne films, I'm totally in. After all, Greengrass is a a director I very much appreciate.

On top of that, Damon always looks good in action roles like these, and the guy behind the screenplay isn't a nobody either. It's Brian Helgeland, who worked on "Mystic River" and "L.A. Confidential."
