William Monahan to write 'Oblivion'

William Monahan, the guy who won an Oscar for his "The Departed" screenplay, is set to write the big-screen adaptation of Joseph Kosinski's Radical Publishing graphic novel "Oblivion" for Walt Disney.

"Oblivion" goes like this: In a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins.

But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows...

Disney acquires Joseph Kosinski's 'Oblivion'

Walt Disney has scored the rights to the big-screen adaptation of Joseph Kosinski's Radical Publishing graphic novel "Oblivion." Radical announced Kosinski will direct the project. Barry Levine will produce.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Joe Kosinski on 'Oblivion,'” Levine said. “Joe is one of the most creative forces in filmmaking today." Levineis president of Radical Pictures. Kosinski also directed "Tron: Legacy."

Midweek film news web roundup: McConaughey & Mendes head 'Southbound;' Renner heads to 'Town'

Here's what you need to know in terms of the latest film news on July 30, 2009:

• Matthew McConaughey and Eva Mendes may star in Jonathan Jakubowicz's upcoming indie flick "Southbound." Peter Craig wrote the script, about a border patrol officer who risks his life and career by accepting a bribe from a gorgeous Mexican woman. (Variety)

• Jeremy Renner ("The Hurt Locker") is attached to join Ben Affleck's "The Town," the big-screen adaptation of Chuck Hogan's novel "The Prince of Thieves." Jon Hamm and Rebecca Hall also star in the film, about a thief who falls in love with the manager (Hall) of the bank he recently robbed. (THR)

• Joseph Kosinski, the director of "Tron Legacy," will direct "Oblivion," an action flick based on his own concept. The story follows an injured solider sent to a damaged planet to destroy the remains of a primitive alien race. Things change when he runs into a mysterious stranger. (THR)
