Daily news dose: Naomi Watts joins Allen film; Seyfried to join 'Sucker'?

Here's your daily news dose for Feb. 23, 2009:

• Naomi Watts is the latest to join Woody Allen's latest film, which is currently untitled. Also on board are Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins. Plot details, as usual, are kept under wraps for now. Watts can currently be seen onscreen in "The International." (Variety)

• The folks at IESB sat down and talked to Zack Snyder about his upcoming flick "Sucker Punch," which is about to head into pre-production. According to Snyder, he's in talks with Amanda Seyfried to join the cast. By the way, the tagline over at IMDb describes the film as "'Alice in Wonderland' with machine guns." Whoa!

• John Cusack, Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson have apparently joined the cast of Sean Anders and John Morris' upcoming comedy "Hot Tub Time Machine," about a group of adults who visit a hot tub they once used and realize it can transport them back in time, to their younger selves. (Joblo)

• Alexandre Aja's "Piranha 3-D" will come, for sure, but you may have to wait for it a little longer. Filming on the remake Joe Dante's 1978 film has been delayed, and Aja recently told MTV News why: “We pushed production back to spring for weather reasons and location reasons.” Yeah, the weather's a sucker indeed!

Movie Review: “The International”

Seen on: February 14, 2009

The players: Director: Tom Tykwer, Writer: Eric Singer, Cast: Clive Owen, Naomi Watts, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Ulrich Thomsen, Brian O Byrne

Facts of interest: Tykwer also directed "Run, Lola, Run."

The plot: Clive Owen stars as an Interpol Agent trying everything in his power to bring down a ruthless bank involved in illegal activities.

Our thoughts: Tom Tykwer’s “The International” is an over-the-top, engrossing and fast-paced thriller boasting fine performances, a bunch of decent action and solid production values. It’s quite an exciting ride really… if you’re willing to suspend your disbelief for most of the film’s two-hour running time.

'The International' web reviews

Tom Tykwer returns with "The International," a thriller starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts. In the film, the two team up to bring down a ruthless world bank. Here is what the Web's critics have to say about the flick:

• William Goss at Cinematical: "Throughout, 'The International' is a thankfully, skillfully mature effort by Tykwer to produce a proper thriller for adults, that of a man on a mission, and one lent little extra resonance in our cash-strapped times."

• Ron Henriques at LatinoReview: "The story of "The International' has more twists and turns and convoluted sub-plots than what most audiences can handle and although this isn't really a popcorn picture, the thrill is in the chase rather than what the heroes are chasing."

• Brad Brevet at RopeOfSilicon: "For what it's worth The International at least has some moments of real entertainment, and while that isn't really saying much it at least gives me something to meekly recommend if a friend calls and asks, something I found myself unable to do only a week ago."

Joblo's Chris Bumbray: "I hope people will get out and see it this weekend, as it deserves to be a major hit."

• Kevin Carr at FilmSchoolRejects: "The plot is convoluted and ridiculous. On one hand, the bank is supposed to be all powerful. On the other hand, it hinges its entire existence on one smoke-and-mirrors weapon deal."

Naomi Watts in talks to play ‘Jody Williams’

Actress Naomi Watts is in talks to star in Audrey Wells’ upcoming Universal drama “My Name is Jody Williams.”

According to Variety, Wells also wrote the screenplay, which is based on a true story and focuses on Jody Williams, who received the Nobel Peace Prize for her involvement in an international campaign against land mines.

Williams is also known for calling former U.S. President Bill Clinton a "weenie" for not signing the land mine ban.

Wells made her directorial debut with 1999’s “Guinevere.” She most recently directed Diane Lane in “Under the Tuscan Sun.”

Watts recently starred in Michael Haneke’s English version of his “Funny Games” and David Cronenberg’s acclaimed “Eastern Promises.” Next up for her is Tom Tykwer’s “The International.”

Final word: Sound like an interesting project. I can easily picture Watts mastering this role without major difficulties.
