Miley Cyrus to star in Disney's 'Wings'

Miley Cyrus will star in Wings

"Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus is in talks to star in Walt Disney's upcoming big-screen adaptation of Aprilynne Pike's recently published book "Wings."

The story follows 15-year-old Laurel, who grows up in a small town and spends most of her early life in solitude. Things start to change when she goes to a new high school and finds out she's actually a fairy.

No writer is attached to the project at this stage. Pike's book is the first of a planned series of four novels. Miley's mother Tish Cyrus will executive produce "Wings."

Cyrus was last seen on the big screen in "Hannah Montana: The Movie." She's currently gearing up for "The Last Song," a drama written by Nicholas Sparks. Julie Anne Robinson is directing.

Greg Kinnear, Kelly Preston to sing 'Last Song'

Greg Kinnear and Kelly Preston have signed on to starr alongside Miley Cyrus in Julie Anne Robinson's upcoming drama The Last Song.

Greg Kinnear and Kelly Preston have signed on to star alongside Miley Cyrus in Julie Anne Robinson's upcoming drama "The Last Song."

The Disney flick is based on Nicholas Sparks' upcoming novel, which he wrote with Cyrus in mind. He simultaneously prepped the script for the big-screen adaptation.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the central plot of "Song" follows a rebellious teenager (Cyrus) who is forced to spend the summer with her father (Kinnear). Only problem: he left her years earlier. Preston will play her mother.

To be honest, this story sounds a lot like "Life as a House," a tearjerker I admit I really enjoyed. Let's hope Sparks injected the script with something innovative.

Kinnear was recently seen in "Flash of Genius." As for Preston, she'll soon star in "Old Dogs." "The Last Song" is currently shooting, and a release date is set for Jan. 8, 2010.

Movie Review: “Hannah Montana: The Movie”

Seen on: April 10, 2009

The players: Director: Peter Chelsom, Writer: Daniel Berendsen, Cast: Miley Cyrus, Billy Ray Cyrus, Emily Osment, Jason Earles

Facts of interest: Peter Chelsom directed "Shall We Dance" and "Serendipity."

The plot: Miley Cyrus takes a trip to her hometown in Tennessee after her alter ego Hannah Montana literally takes over her life and causes her to rethink what's most important in her life.

Our quick thoughts: Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus) always had the best of both worlds, but in “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” Peter Chelsom’s big-screen adaptation of Walt Disney’s ultra-popular television series, she suddenly faces an enormous decision that could make her life even more chaotic than it already is.

'Hannah Montana: The Movie' web reviews

Hannah Montana invades the big screen in Peter Chelsom's "Hannah Montana: The Movie," and this time Miley Stewart returns to her hometown to rediscover herself. Miley Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus star, and here's what the Web's critics think:

Cinematical's Nick Schager: "Director Chelsom dutifully pushes tween girl buttons at every turn – some rainbow imagery here, a song about butterflies there – and fans will undoubtedly allow themselves to be manipulated by such maneuvers."

• Katey Rich at Cinema Blend: "Miley Cyrus is growing up fast, along with her diehard fans, and in many ways seems ready to leave behind the cartoony world of Hannah Montana. She spends the movie vacillating between goofy girl and self-possessed young lady, and other girls going through the same transition will hopefully feel a pang of recognition."

• Fred Topel at Canmag: "'Hannah Montana: The Movie' is harmless. It’s contagiously happy so even if you see right through it, which you can, it’s not worth it."

Die-hard "Hannah Montana" fans, rejoice! If you simply can't wait to see your favorite star invade the big screen in her feature debut "Hannah Montana: The Movie," here are five new clips you can keep yourself busy with for now.

The plot of the flick focuses on Miley Stewart, the popular teenager who leads a secret life as a singer. As her popularity threatens to take over her life, Miley decides to return to her hometown of Crowley Corners, Tenn., where she hopes to rediscover herself.

In the clips after the jump, you'll see Miley trying to feed a bunch of chicken, arriving in Tennessee, singing one of her songs, talking to a boy she seems to like and trying to trick someone she's staying with.

"Hannah Montana: The Movie" is directed by Peter Chelsom, whose credits include the charming romances "Serendipity" and "Shall We Dance." Yes, I was quite surprised as well when I first heard he's be directing this thing.

Official 'Hannah Montana: The Movie' trailer debuts!

Here's the first official trailer for Disney's upcoming "Hannah Montana: The Movie," which opens April 10, 2009. It will be a huge hit, no doubt, and I'm sure they'll start selling tickets next week (just kidding).

Anyway, the film focuses on Miley Stewart, the popular teenager who leads a secret life as a singer. As her popularity threatens to take over her life, Miley decides to return to her hometown of Crowley Corners, Tenn., where she hopes to rediscover herself.

Co-starring are Melora Hardin, Margo Martindale, Emily Osment and Billy Ray Cyrus. Even Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton and Tyra Banks will make an appearance.

I personally think the whole Hannah Montana mania is overrated, but then again, I'm certainly not among Disney's target audience. I'm sure all the Miley Cyrus fans out there will have a glorious time watching this flick.

Check out the trailer below, and feel free to share how excited you are about this release. And if you hate Hannah to death, leave your comments as well.

'Bolt' web reviews

"Twilight" is certainly this weekend's box office winner, but for all those fed up with all the fuss around the vampire romance, Walt Disney has a great alternative. The film's title is "Bolt," and it follows a super-dog who believes he has unique powers until he realizes he's just the star of a TV show. Here's what the Web's critics have to say about it:

• Josh Tyler at Cinema Blend: "It takes each moment, each gag, and builds on it to push story and characters further."

• Jette Kernion at Cinematical: "It's better than many other recent non-Pixar animated films from Disney, and it'll give families something to see in a theater together over the Thanksgiving holiday."

• Brian Orndorf at Collider: "However, the lack of screenwriting imagination is offset by the inherent charm of the picture, resulting in a pleasing arrangement of CG-animated action set-pieces and slapstick comedy to push 'Bolt' beyond the repetitive family film norm."

Review: "Bolt"

Seen on: November 21, 2008

The players: Directors: Chris Williams, Byron Howard, Writers: Dan Fogelman, Chris Williams, Voice cast: John Travolta, Susie Essman, Miley Cyrus, Mark Walton, Malcolm McDowell

Facts of interest: None.

The plot: Bolt is a super-dog who spends most of his time emarking on perilous adventures to protect the world from bad guys, at least until he discovers none of it is real and he's just the star of a TV show.

Our thoughts: “Bolt” is Walt Disney’s latest computer-animated family adventure, and unlike other projects the studio has previously tackled without the support of Pixar, this one pretty much hits all the right notes. The world of Bolt the super-dog is exciting, explosive and touching, and being part of it for 96 minutes feels darn good.
