Michael Mann develops Robert Capa movie

Michael Mann is gearing up to develop a biopic about the life and work of war photographer Robert Capa, with Columbia also jumping on board. The film will be based on the book "Waiting for Robert Capa."

Variety says Jez Butterworth ("Birthday Girl") will adapt Susana Fortes' Spanish novel. Word is the film will also focus on Capa's two-year romance with Gerda Taro, also a renowned photographer.

Capa gained popularity for his work during the Spanish Civil War. Taro was a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany, and she became a famous battle photographer herself.

'Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs' joins box office race

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs tops Wednesday box office

Although Michael Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" still dominated the North American box office with $13.5 million in ticket sales Tuesday, new entry "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" took the crown Wednesday.

Estimates show the latest installment in the "Ice Age" series brought in $14 million. The animated film opened at 3,993 locations Wednesday. Meanwhile, "Revenge of the Fallen" scored around $10 million, lifting its total gross to $238 million.

Also opening Wednesday was Michael Mann's crime drama "Public Enemies," which grabbed $8 million. Starring Johnny Depp, the film follows the adventures of American bank robber John Dillinger.

This holiday weekend should be an interesting, as the box office race between "Fallen" and "Dinosaurs" will intensify. Full estimates for Wednesday will be available later today.

'Public Enemies' web reviews

Christian Bale in Public Enemies

Michael Mann returns to the big screen with "Public Enemies," a crime drama following the adventures of American bank robber John Dillinger. The film stars Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard, Christian Bale, Billy Crudup and Stephen Dorff, and here is what the Web's critics have to say about it:

• Jeffrey M. Anderson at Cinematical: "Most scenes come with an intense immediacy, with an effective use of shaky cams and stark lighting, giving chaos an open invitation to rear its ugly head at any time."

• Brad Brevet at RopeOfSilicon: "I am leaving room for this one to grow on me or slowly settle down to the middle, but one thing's for certain, it had my wheels spinning and may likely end up an all-time classic of mine a few years down the line."

Joblo's Jenna Bush: "Great performances, great camera work, but just not engrossing."

LatinoReview's Ron Henriques: "Though 'Public Enemies' is a crime thriller, the flourishes of action and suspense are few and far between."

• Brian Orndorf at brianorndorf.com: "It’s not really any sort of dramatic feature, but merely an empty vessel for Michael Mann to spin furious circles, shedding much of the vanguard appeal that once came so easily to him."

Movie Review: “Public Enemies”

Seen on: June 29, 2009

The players: Director: Michael Mann, Writers: Michael Mann, Ronan Bennett, Ann Biderman, Cast: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, David Wenham, Billy Crudup

Facts of interest: Based on the book by Bryan Burrough.

The plot: The film tells the story of American bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp), who kept the FBI pretty busy during the Great Depression.

Our thoughts: Michael Mann’s latest gangster drama “Public Enemies” is both intriguing and dull. The film works just fine as a big-budget production highlighting John Dillinger’s spectacular escapes, wild shoot-outs with the FBI and fast-paced robberies, but as an examination of the man’s character and the key players around him, it clearly fails.
