Is Mel Gibson making a comeback?

It looks as though America's most loveable disaster, Mel Gibson, is plotting a major comeback. Although his most recent film "The Beaver" was met with applause at Cannes Film Festival back in May, it seemed to fade into the ether rather quickly, grossing less than $1 million.

However, Gibson, still recovering from the media's scathing coverage of his bitter custody battle and subsequent late night drunken telephone rants, might be making his way back into the limelight.

THR is stating that several agencies are courting Gibson, who has been without an agency since WME dropped him last summer. On top of this, Gibson recently completed a film that he produced entitled "How I Spent My Summer Vacation."

Liam Neeson replaces Gibson in 'Hangover 2'

Liam Neeson stars in The Hangover 2

Who's replacing Mel Gibson in that infamous cameo in Todd Phillips' "The Hangover 2" (also known as "The Hangover Part II")? It's Liam Neeson! He will have a short appearance as a tattooist in the sequel.

Gibson was all set to shoot the part, but some members of the cast and crew on the film started pooping their pants and protested the decision, which caused the studio to drop Gibson for good.

Neeson, who worked with "The Hangover" star Bradley Cooper before, was available, and he's shooting the cameo in Thailand. Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha star in the film.

Neeson is showing up in a lot of stuff soon. He has a cameo in Paul Haggis' "The Next Three Days," he's got the lead in "Unknown," and he also appears in "Battleship." "The Hangover 2" arrives May 26, 2011.

No Mel Gibson in 'Hangover 2' after all

As you may have heard, Mel Gibson was supposed to appear for a cameo in Todd Phillips' upcoming sequel "The Hangover 2," but that's no longer happening. Yep, Mel Gibson's gig has indeed be cancelled.

Thing is, some folks at Warner Bros. and within the production of the film were not happy at all with the decision to have Mel step in front of the camera, so to avoid a mess, they just dumped the idea.

Phillips said in a statement: "I thought Mel would have been great in the movie and I had the full backing of (the studio). But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew."

Anyway, I don't think it will harm the film that much. They can find someone else to play a funny dude. Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha are all back for "The Hangover 2."

'Avatar' wins Friday box office race with $7M

Cameron's 'Avatar' is still the dominant force at the box office; new releases still no real threat...

James Cameron's "Avatar" held on to the No. 1 spot at the North American box office Friday with a solid $7.3 million in ticket sales, beating all new releases while reaching a domestic total gross of $571.7 million.

Mel Gibson's new thriller "Edge of Darkness" came close to defeating "Avatar," but Cameron's sci-fi flick prevailed, heading for yet another weekend win. "Darkness" grabbed $5.6 million from 3,066 locations. The film is based on a popular BBC TV mini-series.

In the thriller directed by Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale"), Gibson plays a tough Boston detective who penetrates a dark and dangerous world after his daughter is brutally murdered on his doorsteps.

Debuting in third place Friday was Mark Steven Johnson's comedy "When in Rome," which generated $4.4 million from ticket sales at 2,456 locations. The film stars Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel.

Movie Review: “Edge of Darkness”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: January 26, 2010

The players: Director: Martin Campbell, Writers: William Monahan, Andrew Bovell, Cast: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Bojana Novakovic

Facts of interest: Remake of a British TV mini-series.

The plot: Mel Gibson plays a detective who goes totally nuts after his daughter is murdered right in front of him.

Our thoughts: Mel Gibson returns to action on the big screen in Martin Campbell’s new thriller “Edge of Darkness,” and while he’s undoubtedly in great shape, the movie itself could do with a little more spice. That said, “Darkness” still qualifies as an entertaining viewing experience I had no trouble enjoying throughout.

Mel Gibson is a 'Cold Warrior'?

There is a chance Mel Gibson will end up starring in the new film by Shane Black, screenwriter of "Lethal Weapon." The new project is titled "Cold Warrior," and the spy thriller is set up at Universal.

The Hollywood Reporter says the film was written by Charles Mondry and follows a Cold War spy leaving retirement to team up with a younger agent and tackle a domestic terrorist threat from Russia.

Looks like Mel is indeed trying to return and kick some butt onscreen. His latest film, "Edge of Darkness," opens this Friday, and although I can't say too much about it yet, I will say that it's not that bad of a flick.
