Movie Review: “Terminator Salvation”

Seen on: May 21, 2009

The players: Director: McG, Writers:Anthony E. Zuiker, John Brancato, Michael Ferris, Cast: Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin, Moon Bloodgood, Common

Facts of interest: McG also directed "Charlie's Angels," "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" and "We Are Marshall."

The plot: John Connor (Christian Bale) leads the human resistance through the battle against the machines after Skynet has destroyed most of the world.

Our thoughts: Sure, McG’s “Terminator Salvation” is not as good as I expected, and it’s by far not as awesome as the new “Star Trek,” but I also admit I don’t really feel all the bad press the film’s been facing. I agree the fourth installment in the popular “Terminator” series has its problems, but to be honest, I found it quite entertaining.

'Terminator Salvation' web reviews

McG's "Terminator Salvation" has finally arrived, and fans can flock to theaters to see Christian Bale battle the machines as John Connor. But what do some of the Web's critics have to say about this latest "Terminator" installment? Let's find out:

Cinematical's Erik Davis: "The outcome is a product that lacks a cohesive structure and suffers from too-many-hands-in-the-cookie-jar syndrome."

• Katey Rich at CinemaBlend: "But as a place to start, 'Terminator Salvation' isn't half bad, and definitely a promising start to a revival of the franchise."

• Cole Abaius at Film School Rejects: "The acting is good, but the characters play no role in pushing the action. The movie could have been made without them and would have been exactly the same."

LatinoReview's Ron Henriques: "The series looked bleak for me following the last film, but now I'm optimistic. With or without McG, in the right hands and with a good story, we could have a second trilogy that may rival the first."

McG talks 'Terminator Salvation' sequel

Christian Bale in Terminator Salvation

McG's anticipated "Terminator Salvation" won't open until May 21, 2009, but the film is likely going to score big at the box office, and the director is already talking about a potential sequel. Before you read on, please know this may contain a mild spoiler. Talking to the Film Journal, McG said, "I strongly suspect the next movie is going to take place in a [pre-Judgment Day] 2011."

He also said, "John Connor is going to travel back in time and he's going to have to galvanize the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion. They've figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than one naked entity. So you're going to have hunter killers and transports and harvesters and everything arriving in our time and Connor fighting back with conventional military warfare, which I think is going to be fucking awesome."

According to the Hollywood Reporter, McG is in talks to direct and produce the project, which is not yet backed by a studio. The central story is set in Germany and follows a group of teens discovering their sexuality.

McG's next big film, "Terminator Salvation" will open May 21, 2009. The director's credits also include "We Are Marshall and the two "Charlie's Angels" flicks. He's also been serving as executive producer on shows like "Chuck" and "Supernatural."

Another 'Terminator Salvation' poster hits the web

They just keep coming, don't they? Kinopoisk has posted a new poster for McG's upcoming "Terminator Salvation," and while it doesn't look all that bad, I can't seem to get all excited about it either.

I don't really know what it is that bothers me about it, really. Maybe it's because it's so different from the great one-sheets we've seen over the past couple of months.

Starring Christian Bale, the film follows John Connor, who struggles to prevent the machines from eliminating what is left of humanity. Also starring are Anton Yelchin, Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood, Helena Bonham Carter and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Full-size poster follows after the jump. Don't miss "Terminator Salvation" in theaters May 21, 2009. This is one of only a few films I'm extremely exicted about this year. What about you?

Most of the footage you see here is taken straight from the trailers, but you may catch a few new shots here and there in these great 30-second spots. At this point, I just hope this movie delivers the goods from start to finish. Come on, we deserve it!
