Movie Review: "RED"

Seen on: October 16, 2010

The players: Director: Robert Schwentke, Writers: Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, Cast: Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich

Facts of interest: Based on a graphic novel.

The plot: Bruce Willis plays a retired agent hunted by the CIA. As a result, he gathers his old team and attempts to stop the bad guys before they finish the job.

Our thoughts: Boasting a great cast capable of delivering both action and comedy, Robert Schwentke’s “RED” works just fine as a source of brainless big-screen entertainment. None of what the film has to offer should make you run outside proclaiming it’s the best movie of the year, but as long as you’re not taking anything in this thing too seriously, you may just have a good time with Bruce Willis and Co.

New awesome 'Red' trailer debuts!

Robert Schwentke's upcoming action comedy "Red" looks really cool, and this brand-new feature trailer proves that yet again! Check it out after the jump, because it really delivers the crazy, explosive goods!

"Red" is based on the DC Comics graphic novel of the same name by Warren Ellis, and it boasts a fantastic cast: Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Mary-Louise Parker & John Malkovich.

The flick tells the story of Frank Moses (Willis), a former black-ops CIA agent who is now living a quiet life.  That is, until the day a hi-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him and his old CIA buddies.

With his identity compromised and the life of the woman he cares for, Sarah (Parker), endangered, Frank reassembles his old team (Freeman, Malkovich and Mirren) in a last ditch effort to survive.

Mary-Louise Parker is 'Solitary'

“Weeds” star Mary-Louise Parker has signed on to star alongside Michael Douglas in Brian Koppelman and David Levien’s “Solitary Man.”

Written by Koppelman, the follows a former owner (Douglas) of a car dealership chain whose career and marriage were destroyed by his business and romantic indiscretions.

According to Variety, Parker is playing a high-powered society sweetheart of Douglas' character.

Susan Sarandon, Danny DeVito and Jenna Fischer co-star in the project, which heads into production later this year.

Parker, whose credits include “Angels in America” and “The West Wing,” also recently starred in “The Spiderwick Chronicles.”

Final word: I adore “Weeds” and love Mary-Louise Parker. Enough said!

Five more join Allen Ginsberg biopic

The cast for “Howl” is growing, as David Strathairn, Alan Alda, Jeff Daniels, Mary-Louise Parker and Paul Rudd are in talks to join the upcoming Allen Ginsberg biopic, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Written and directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, the film focuses on the trail launched to censor Ginsberg’s lengthy poem entitled “Howl.” James Franco is on board to portray the lead character.

Strathairn stars as prosecuting attorney Ralph McIntosh, while Alda plays Judge Clayton Horn. Daniels takes on the role of prosecution witness professor David Kirk, with Parker playing prosecution witness Gail Potter and Rudd starring as defense witness Luther Nichols.

Strathairn was last seen in “The Spiderwick Chronicles” and recently completed “The Uninvited.” Alda will next star in “Flash of Genius,” while Rudd can next be seen in “Role Models.”

As for Parker, she is currently starring in television’s “Weeds.” Daniels can be seen on the big screen alongside Don Cheadle in “Traitor.”

I haven’t had a chance yet to read through Ginsberg’s poem, but this project sounds pretty interesting. Considering this impressive casting announcement, this is definitely one to look out for once it’s in the can.
