Movie Review: 'Green Lantern'

Seen on: June 15, 2011

The players: Director: Martin Campbell, Writers: Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong

Facts of interest: Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, and Zack Snyder were all at one point approached to helm this film.

The plot: Hal Jordan (Reynolds), a talented yet arrogant test pilot, is the chosen recipient of a mysterious green ring that grants him both superhuman powers and entry into an elite corps of intergalactic warriors. This group is charged with saving the universe from the evil Parallax.

Our thoughts: Comic book fans have always endured a certain amount of mockery that superhero stories are just for kids or grown-ups suffering from arrested development. Well, "Green Lantern," Warner's staggering $300 million dollar train wreck won’t help matters. Worse yet, director Martin Campbell (who famously resurrected the James Bond franchise) can't decide who his target audience is.

Another new clip from 'Green Lantern' surfaces

Still unsure about whether to drop $10 or more to see "Green Lantern"? Me too. Warner Bros. must be sensing the lack of buzz surrounding the film as they have released multiple clips of it in the past 24 hours. Check out this new footage from the film below. Excited?

In the film, a test pilot (Ryan Reynolds) is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe. Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard co-star.

'Green Lantern 2' finds screenwriter!

Warner Bros. is convinced "Green Lantern" will be a huge hit, because the studio is already developing the sequel, "Green Lantern 2." The screenwriter is hired already as well: Michael Goldenberg.

Goldenberg's credits include 2003's "Peter Pan" and "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." He also did some work on the script for the first "Green Lantern," which Martin Campbell has just finished shooting.

Variety says Warner's move comes after Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim penned a treatment for the sequel. The first "Lantern" will open June 17, 2011. Ryan Reynolds stars.

Reynolds' got a scary look there, but his costume looks pretty cool, and very green of course. That said, I sincerely hope we'll soon get to see some official movie stills from the project as well.

Movie Review: “Edge of Darkness”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: January 26, 2010

The players: Director: Martin Campbell, Writers: William Monahan, Andrew Bovell, Cast: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Bojana Novakovic

Facts of interest: Remake of a British TV mini-series.

The plot: Mel Gibson plays a detective who goes totally nuts after his daughter is murdered right in front of him.

Our thoughts: Mel Gibson returns to action on the big screen in Martin Campbell’s new thriller “Edge of Darkness,” and while he’s undoubtedly in great shape, the movie itself could do with a little more spice. That said, “Darkness” still qualifies as an entertaining viewing experience I had no trouble enjoying throughout.
