Teaser trailer for Disney's 'John Carter'

Andrew Stanton's Disney flick "John Carter" is set for release in theaters March 9, 2012, and the first trailer for the sci-fi adventure is now online. Check it out after the jump; it does look pretty compelling. Taylor Kitsch stars as the film's lead character JC.

Here's what's in store for us: Civil War vet John Carter is transplanted to Mars, where he discovers a lush, wildly diverse planet whose main inhabitants are 12-foot tall green barbarians. He finds himself a prisoner of these creatures, and decides to escape.

From there, things spin out of control and he meets a princess in need of his help. Lynn Collins, Mark Strong and Willem Dafoe co-star. "John Carter" looks solid for now, but please, please, please let this not turn into another "Prince of Persia." Seriously, please...

Lynn Collins, Jeremy Piven board 'Waska'

Thomas Dekker, Lynn Collins, Jeremy Piven and Kate Walsh are all part of the cast for Gaby Dellal's upcoming drama "Waska," and Mira Sorvino, Elizabeth McGovern and Joseph Morgan are also on board.

The Hollywood Reporter says the film is based on a novel by Leslie Schwartz and focuses on a young father who's in for some big trouble after his 3-year-old son freezes to death during a fishing trip.

Dekker plays the lead, while Collins plays his ex-wife. Piven portrays a prosecutor going after the father. Catherine Trieschmann wrote the screenplay for the film, which is shooting now.

Thomas Haden Church confirmed for 'Mars'

Thomas Haden Church is now confirmed for and James Purefoy and Mark Strong have officially joined Walt Disney's upcoming "John Carter of Mars," the big-screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' series of books.

The film focuses on a Civil War veteran (Taylor Kitsch) who is mysteriously transported to Mars, where he encounters a whole bunch of mysterious creatures. Andrew Stanton is directing the adventure.

The solid cast also includes Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Dominic West and Polly Walker. Heat Vision says Church plays Tal Hajus, a vicious Thark warrior planning to become a ruler.

Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins head to 'Mars'

Taylor Kitsch stars in John Carter of Mars

Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins have signed on to star in Andrew Stanton's upcoming live-action fantasy flick "John Carter of Mars," according to Variety.

Based on the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the film version focuses on a Civil War veteran (Kitsch) who is mysteriously transported to Mars, where he encounters a bunch of four-armed, green creatures.

The trade says Collins will play the Princess of Mars. Collins and Kitsch ("Friday Night Lights") previously co-starred in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

"Mars" will head into principal photography next year, with a release set for 2012. Stanton's credits include "Finding Nemo" and "WALL-E."
