Movie Review: "Bridesmaids"

Awesome Bridesmaids poster

Seen on: May 13, 2011

The players: Director: Paul Feig, Writers: Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo Cast: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper

Facts of interest: Feig also helmed numerous episodes of "The Office."

The plot: The story follows a stressed maid of honor (Wiig) who has trouble handling a bunch of crazy bridesmaids.

Our thoughts: The posters look fantastic, the trailers are hilarious, and a cast like this one promises nothing but fun. The actual movie? Well, let’s just say it could be a bit better. Although it boasts a bunch of glorious scenes filled with solid laughs, Paul Feig’s new comedy “Bridesmaids” doesn’t quite succeed in wanting to be the most entertaining comedy we’ve seen in a long time. It’s a good flick, but it might not deserve all the praise it’s been getting.

This week's new movie releases - May 13, 2011

The summer season at the movies is supposedly in full swing, but the next two weeks won't see that many huge releases. In fact, only three big films will debut this week and the one after that. On the menu this Friday: Universal's comedy "Bridesmaids" and Sony's 3D action piece "Priest." Let's take a closer look.

BRIDESMAIDS, with Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne

In the flick, Wiig plays Annie, who looks to bluff her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals with an oddball group of bridesmaids. Sound funny? Kind of. I have high hopes for this one because I thoroughly respect Wiig's talents and comic timing, and luckily enough, she's also got a writing credit on the film.

Megan Fox joins 'Friends with Kids'

Megan Fox is hot

Megan Fox will soon share the screen with Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig and Adam Scott, because the "Transformers" actress has joined Jennifer Westfeldt's upcoming comedy "Friends with Kids."

THR says the movie follows two best friends (Scott and Westfeldt) who see what having children has done to couples they know and consequently decide to have a kid and then date other people.

Wiig and Hamm will play another couple, and Fox will play a chick Scott's character begins to date. Fox, who starred in "Jonah Hex," has "Passion Play" coming soon. She also stars in "Wish Wizard."

Better trailer for 'Despicable Me' arrives

Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin's upcoming 3D-animated family flick "Despicable Me" will invade theaters July 9, 2010, and a brand-new feature trailer has just debuted online. To be honest, I'm still not convinced about this one, but then again, I have to admit this preview gives me higher hopes than its weak predecessors. Believe it or not, but I actually laughed twice or three times watching this one.

This feature preview reveals a lot more story and new characters, but it also includes a couple of solid jokes, which I hope are more frequent in the film. Steve Carell voices Gru, an evil man who plans to steal the moon. Gru runs into trouble when he unexpectedly encounters three orphan girls, and at the same time, he's also struggling to beat his greatest enemy Vector (Jason Segel), the world's greatest villain.

'MacGruber' release date change!

Here is a quick release date chane alert: Universal Pictures has decided to not release "MacGruber" on April 23, 2010. Instead, the studio will push back the upcoming comedy until May 21, 2010. It will now go up against "Shrek Forever After."

"MacGruber" is based on SNL's popular "MacGyver" parody, and it stars Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer and Ryan Phillippe. It follows MacGruber as he's forced out of retirement to hunt down Cunth (Kilmer), a villain who possesses a nuclear bomb.

Red and Green band trailers for 'MacGruber'

The Mac is coming to the screen, and he's got two trailers!

As you may have already heard, "MacGruber" is coming to the big screen, and red and green band trailers for the action comedy have debuted online. They're not that funny, but see for yourself after the jump.

"MacGruber" is based on SNL's popular "MacGyver" parody, and it stars Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer and Ryan Phillippe. The film is expected to hit theaters April 23, 2010. Jorma Taccone directed the flick.

The original skits had Forte play MacGyver's son and Wiig portraying his assistant, who find themselves stuck in a room with a ticking time bomb. The feature film will head into a slightly different direction.

Written by Forte, Taccone and John Solomon, the script follows MacGruber as he's forced out of retirement to hunt down Cunth (Kilmer), a villain who possesses a nuclear bomb. Phillippe is one of his allies.

New 'Despicable Me' trailer disappoints

Despicable Me

A brand-new teaser trailer for Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin's upcoming 3D-animated family flick "Despicable Me" has popped up on the Web, and you can take a look at it right after the jump.

Steve Carell voices Gru, an evil man who plans to steal the moon. While his evil mother encourages him to execute his plan, Gru runs into trouble when he unexpectedly encounters three orphan girls.

This special preview focuses on Gru's rivarly with Vector, another villain. Sadly, I'm not at all impressed with this footage. I did enjoy the first teaser trailer, but this one seriously disappoints.

Movie Review: “Whip It”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: October 2, 2009

The players: Director: Drew Barrymore, Writer: Shauna Cross, Cast: Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis

Facts of interest: Drew Barrymore's directorial debut.

The plot: Ellen Page plays a Texas teenager who's fed up with beauty pageants and discovers her happiness in roller derby.

Our thoughts: Drew Barrymore celebrates her feature directorial debut with “Whip It,” and the result sure isn’t bad. The film is by no means perfect, but a terrific Ellen Page and a solid supporting cast inject a lot of energy and heart into Shauna Cross’ script, based on her novel about the world of women’s roller derby.
