Exclusive Interview: Guillermo Arriaga, writer and director of 'The Burning Plain'

I recently had the chance to sit down and talk to Guillermo Arriaga, Oscar-nominated filmmaker who's known for writing fantastic films such as "21 Grams," "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" and "Babel." Arriaga most recently wrote and directed "The Burning Plain," and here is what the film is about:

A romantic mystery about a woman on the edge who takes an emotional journey back to the defining moment of her life. Charlize Theron plays Sylvia, a beautiful restaurant manager whose cool, professional demeanor masks the sexually charged storm within.

Kim Basinger joins Efron in 'Charlie St. Cloud'

Kim Basinger

Kim Basinger is set to join Zac Efron in Burr Steers' upcoming drama "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud," with Universal Pictures developing the project.

Based on the novel by Ben Sherwood, the film follows Efron as a cemetary caretaker who meets weekly with a younger brother, who recently died.

Variety says Basinger will play the grieving mother of the lead character. Also starring as Efron's love interest is Amanda Crew.

Basinger's more recent credits include "Cellular," "The Sentinel" and "The Burning Plain." Good to have her back on the big screen.

BTW, "Cloud" marks Efron's second collaboration with the director after "17 Again.

Press warms up to 'The Burning Plain'

"The Burning Plain" just premiered at the 65th edition of the Venice Film Festival, and first reviews suggest the film's not that bad at all. The film is directed by Guillermo Arriaga and stars Charlize Theron, Kim Basinger, Jennifer Lawrence and Joaquim de Almeida.

From Yahoo! Movies: Connected storylines about love, forgiveness and redemption that take place in different places and times--Mariana, a 16 year old girl tries to put together the shattered lives of her parents in a Mexican border town; Sylvia, a woman in Portland, undertakes an emotional odyssey to redeem a sin from her past; Gina and Nick, a couple who must deal with a clandestine love; and Maria, a young girl who helps her parents find forgiveness.

Guillermo Arriaga's "The Burning Plain" reviewed at Times Online, The Hollywood Reporter and The Guardian.
