Movie Review: “The Men Who Stare at Goats”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: November 5, 2009

The players: Director: Grant Heslov, Writer: Peter Straughan, Cast: George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges, Rebecca Mader, Stephen Lang

Facts of interest: Inspired by Jon Ronson's book.

The plot: A journalist may finally find his big story when meets a man who claims he is a psychic soldier with paranormal powers.

Our thoughts: Grant Heslov’s “The Men Who Stare at Goats” is a bizarre little film, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it’s as funny as it’s awkward, and that’s certainly a good thing. This light comedy may not be very meaningful, but it’s filled with a solid dose of witty moments and a bunch of excellent acting performances.

Watch Kevin Spacey in 'Shrink' trailer

Kevin Spacey in Shrink

Here is the first trailer for Jonas Pate's upcoming drama "Shrink," which stars Kevin Spacey as Henry Carter, a psychiatrist with an A-list clientele, including a once-famous actress, an insecure young writer, and a comically obsessive-compulsive superagent. Henry is not in a good place, however. He has been asked to take his first pro bono case, a troubled teenage girl from a neighborhood far from the Hollywood hills...

"Shrink" will open in the U.S. July 24, 2009. That said, the role of a crazy shrink seems to be perfect for Kevin Spacey, who last starred in "21." Enjoy the trailer after the jump, and check out the film's official poster below.

Columbia to develop real-life pirate tale

Richard Phillips

True stories sometimes make great movie plots, and the latest real-life story to hit the big screen is captain Richard Phillips' recent capture by four Somali pirates. According to Variety, Columbia Pictures has bought Phillips' life rights and will probably use his upcoming memoir as a basis for the project, which Michael DeLuca, Kevin Spacey, Dana Brunetti and Scott Rudin will produce.

Unless you lead a completely reculsive life with no connection to the outside world, TV or the Web, you've certainly heard about Richard Phillips, who surrendered to pirates after his ship was hijacked back in April. After an escape attempt went wrong, Navy SEALS killed three pirates and successfully rescued Phillips. Quite an intriguing true story indeed, and if handled the right way, it could make for an intense flick.
