Kevin Smith unveils 'Red State' poster

Kevin Smith is wrapping up his upcoming horror film "Red State," and to celebrate the end of shooting, etc., he debuted the film's teaser poster on his website. You can check out the one-sheet after the jump.

Essentially, "Red State" is a horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America. Kyle Gallner, John Goodman, Melissa Leo and Michael Angarano star.

Smith said, "But this piece of artwork (I call it “The Holy Ghost”) didn’t come from a top-tier ad agency: Jon Gordon is my RED STATE producer, and this poster was created by his assistant, Melissa Bloom."

'Shutter Island' slashes new releases Friday

'Shutter Island' holds on to No. 1 for now...

Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" defended the No. 1 spot at the North American box office Friday with a solid $6.6 million in ticket sales, according to early studio estimates. Ever since its release last weekend, "Island" has reached a cumulative gross of $59.5 million.

New entry "Cop Out," the new comedy directed by Kevin Smith, finished second Friday, earning $5.975 million. The film, which is now playing at 3,150 locations, stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as two buddy cops trying to find a stolen baseball card. Read my review here.

Following closely in third place was Breck Eisner's horror remake "The Crazies," which bagged $5.970 million from ticket sales at 2,476 locations. The film follows a group of people trying to stay alive while everyone else in their small town goes crazy and turns to brutal violence.

Meanwhile, James Cameron's "Avatar" landed in fourth place with $3.1 million, reaching a domestic total of $696 million after a superb 71-day run. "Valentine's Day" followed at No. 5, generating $2.9 million for a total haul of $93.7 million.

Movie Review: “Cop Out”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: February 26, 2010

The players: Director: Kevin Smith, Writers: Robb Cullen, Mark Cullen, Cast: Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Adam Brody, Kevin Pollak

Facts of interest: First film Kevin Smith has directed but not written.

The plot: Two cops are looking for a valuable baseball card while tracking down a bunch of ruthless criminals.

Our thoughts: Kevin Smith’s “Cop Out” with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan in the starring roles of two buddy cops passes as a dull comedy that should’ve been funny. Alas, there’s not too much to laugh about in this drag of a movie, which tries really hard to bombard audiences with bad jokes that simply don’t fly.

Trailer for Kevin Smith's 'Cop Out' looks lame

Cop Out does not look good

Kevin Smith has a new action comedy coming out soon, and right now, it looks like crap. The film is titled "Cop Out," and it stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. You can check out the preview after the jump.

The film was originally called "A Couple of Dicks," but Warner Bros. thought the title was just too vulgar or something. In fact, Smith recently said he did not have much control over the film anyway.

Maybe that's why it looks lame. It follows two cops (Willis and Morgan) whose adventures include locating a stolen baseball card, rescuing a woman, and dealing with gangsters and their laundered money.

Kevin Smith's 'Couple of Dicks' may get new title

Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan in A Couple of Dicks

Kevin Smith's next comedy is called "A Couple of Dicks," but according to the filmmaker, that title may change before the film opens in theaters Feb. 26, 2009.

At Comic-Con, Smith said some television networks refuse to air spots for the film before 9 p.m. The reason: the title, of course.

Smith already had trouble marketing his previous flick "Zack and Miri Make a Porno." In many ads, the film's title was changed to "Zack and Miri."

Apparently, nobody learned a valuable lesson here, and consequently, "Dicks" will likely be retitled. By the way, the networks with wet pants are ABC, NBC and CBS.

Seann William Scott, Adam Brody join Smith's 'Dicks'

Seann William Scott will star in A Couple of Dicks

Seann William Scott and Adam Brody are the latest to join Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan in Kevin Smith's upcoming comedy "A Couple of Dicks," which Warner Bros. is developing. Robb and Mark Cullen wrote the script for the action comedy, which will start shooting next week and is currently set to open Feb. 26, 2009.

Willis plays a cop who, along with his partner (Morgan), encounters a mysterious gangster and rescues a Mexican chick during their investigation into the theft of a valuable baseball card. According to Variety, Scott plays a thief known as Shit Bandit (oh my!), while Brody is on board to play a detective.

Scott recently delivered a refreshing performance in "Role Models." Brody, whose credits include "The O.C.," will soon star in "Jennifer's Body." As for Smith, he last directed the moderately entertaining comedy "Zack and Miri Make a Porno."

'Zack and Miri Make a Porno' web reviews

Kevin Smith returns to the big screen with "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," in which Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks decide to make a porno in order to get rid off their growing debt. You can read Joseph's review right here. Also, let's see what other online critics have to say about it:

Cinematical's Scott Weinberg: "If the movie falters a few time near the finish line (with a third act that's a bit too conventional for a guy like Kevin Smith), it's a small gripe in the face of a flick that delivers lots of big, strong laughs"

• Brad Brevet at RopeOfSilicon: "Zack and Miri Make a Porno has the Kevin Smith vibe to it, but its conceit almost seems to get in the way of itself as this over-the-top sex comedy ramps up only to see Smith overcompensate the more risqué humor with a sticky sweet love story that gets quite sappy."

Review: "Zack and Miri Make a Porno"

Seen on: October 29, 2008

The players: Director: Kevin Smith, Writer: Kevin Smith, Cast: Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Jason Mewes, Katie Morgan, Craig Robinson

Facts of interest: "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" was originally slapped with a NC-17 rating.

The plot: In order to take care of their growing debt, lifelong best friends Zack and Miri decide to make a porno.

Our thoughts: Just in time for Halloween, one of the original independent filmmakers, Kevin Smith, gives us something truly frightening … Seth Rogen in a porno. No offence to Seth; I think he’s cuddly and all, but porn material, I think not. Or maybe I’ve just been out of the straight porn-watching world for so long that this is what porn has come to. That said, I doubt I’ll be making a trip to my local video shop later to catch up on everything I’ve missed.

This week in theaters: Zack, Miri and Molly

Here are the wide releases for Friday, Oct. 31, 2008: "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" and "The Haunting of Molly Hartley."

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO

Who's in it? Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Jason Mewes, Katie Morgan, Craig Robinson, Justin Long

What is it about? Two lifelong friends decide to make a porno in order to wipe out their debt.

Excited? Very much so. Although early reviews are mixed, I'm quite excited to see Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks team up to make their porno version of "Star Wars." Could be very funny indeed.
