'Paul Blart' secures No. 1 spot at Friday box office

Kevin James' new comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" topped the North American box office Friday with an estimated $9.7 million in ticket sales. In the Steve Carr-directed film, James plays a security guard trying to protect his mall from a group of crooks.

Debuting at No. 2 with a surprising $8.2 million was "Notorious," which opened at only 1,637 locations this weekend. New entry "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" followed in third place, earning $8.2 million also. "Notorious" emerged as the movie with the higher theater average.

Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" slipped to No. 4, collecting $6.2 million and reaching $57.2 million. The movie follows a racist Korean War veteran who forms an unusual bond with a Hmong teenager.

At No. 5, Thor Freudenthal's family adventure "Hotel for Dogs" debuted with $4.3 million. Emma Roberts and Jake T. Austin star as two siblings rescuing stray dogs and hiding them in an abandoned hotel.

Other Friday box office results: "Defiance" finished eighth with a daily gross of $2.7 million; "Last Chance Harvey" pulled in $1.2 million at No. 12; and "Revolutionary Road" took home $480,000 at No. 18.

'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' web reviews

His name is Blart, Paul Blart, and he's struggling to protect his mall. In Steve Carr's latest comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," Kevin James plays a good-hearted security guard who declares war on a bunch of crooks taking over his mall. Here is what the Web's critics say about the movie:

CinemaBlend's Katey Rich: "Tasteless and slow and tonally uneven and all the other bad adjectives there are, 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' is way too few ideas short of an actual feature, a couple of Segway jokes stretched to an hour and a half running time."

• Nick Schager at Cinematical: "Harmlessly humorless, Paul Blart tepidly goes through its motions, but that doesn't mean you have to."

• Kevin Carr at FilmSchoolRejects: "This movie is stupid, and not always in a bad way. It’s a typical January release, as it’s not going to win any awards and would have been crushed in the holiday box office."

RopeOfSilicon's Brad Brevet: "This film washed right over me. I didn't laugh and I didn't cringe. I sat and stared at a movie screen knowing it had to end and once it did I would get up and leave."

Review: “Paul Blart: Mall Cop”

Seen on: January 16, 2009

The players: Director: Steve Carr, Writers: Nick Bakay, Kevin James, Cast: Kevin James, Keir O'Donnell, Raini Rodriguez, Adhir Kalyan, Jayma Mays

Facts of interest: Steve Carr also directed "Daddy Day Care."

The plot: A devoted mall security guard (James) tries to stop a bunch of criminals from robbing his mall.

Our thoughts: Sure, safety never takes a holiday, but I truly wish films like “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” would. Kevin James’ latest big-screen effort may not be as terrible as I originally expected, but the movie’s lame story line and lack of decent humor still made it really hard for me to enjoy myself.

Watch Kevin James in two 'Paul Blart' clips

I love Kevin James on "King of Queens," I really do, but his couple of appearances on the big-screen didn't win mer over at all.

Okay, he was funny in "Hitch," but 2007's "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry" was pretty dreadul and anything but funny.

Now James returns in the family friendly comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," and to be honest, what I've seen so far is not at all hilarious.

In the film, James plays a dedicated security guard who tries to prevent a gang of criminals from taking over the mall. Sounds like a cool idea, but it doesn't look that great at this stage.

Check out two new clips from the movie after the jump. I personally don't think there is anything funny about James crawling on the floor etc, but who knows, maybe your kids will get a kick out of it. "Blart" opens Jan. 16, 2009.
