Review: “Swing Vote”

Seen on: July 27, 2008

The players: Director: Joshua Michael Stern, Writers: Joshua Michael Stern, Jason Richman, Cast: Kevin Costner, Dennis Hopper, Nathan Lane, Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci

Facts of interest: Stern's next project is "King Lear."

The plot: The outcome of the presidential election comes down to one man's vote (Costner).

Our quick thoughts: Are you ready to vote? Like many politicians these days, “Swing Vote” makes a lot of promises but eventually fails to keep them. The original idea behind Joshua Michael Stern’s comedy has a lot of potential despite being quite implausible, but in the end, it’s the execution of the concept that ends up failing miserably.

‘Swing Vote’ web reviews

I’m about ready to head out to the theater to see Joshua Michael Stern’s comedy “Swing Vote,” but before I leave, let’s take a brief look at what the Web’s critics have to say about the new film starring Kevin Costner, Denis Hopper, Kelsey Grammer and Madeline Carroll. As usual, click on the names below to read the full reviews. Our review will follow later today.

James Rocchi at Cinematical: "'Swing Vote' isn't going to be remembered as the best political comedy of our time (Ivan Reitman's wacky-but-warm Dave still holds that position) but it's not a bad showcase for Costner, and its heart and brain are both in something close to the right place."

• CinemaBlend's Katey Rich: "The film contains bits of Capra-esque, everyman fantasy and bits of gritty and realistic rural drama, but the balance never works out to create a coherent or compelling story. It’s good to see Costner doing comedy again, but he’ll need a better vehicle before he stages a real comeback."

• Brad Brevet at RopeofSilicon: "Perhaps the most enjoyment I got out of the entire film was from the over the top political ads run by the two candidates (Kelsey Grammer and Dennis Hopper) as they were forced to flip-flop depending on whatever Bud said in the media."

Watch five clips from ‘Swing Vote’

Do you already feel the election heat? If not, you may want to check out Joshua Michael Stern’s comedy “Swing Vote” in theaters this weekend. In the film, the result of the U.S. presidential election accidentally comes down to one man’s vote.

Kevin Costner, Madeline Carroll, Kelsey Grammer, Dennis Hopper, Nathan Lane and Stanley Tucci star. Below, you can check out five brand-new clips from the comedy. Although the whole story line sounds rather improbable, I have to admit I like what I’ve seen so far. Enjoy!
