Movie Review: “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: October 19, 2009

The players: Director: Paul Weitz, Writers: Brian Helgeland, Paul Weitz, Cast: John C. Reilly, Ken Watanabe, Josh Hutcherson, Chris Massoglia, Ray Stevenson

Facts of interest: Based on the books by Darren Shan.

The plot: A teenager visits a freak show and decides to jump on board and become a vampire, which really pisses off his best friend. A rivalry ensues...

Our thoughts: Paul Weitz’s “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant” is the beginning of something we may even never get to see. It’s merely an introduction to what could be a more intriguing story, and that’s the main reason I simply couldn’t connect with this dark, periodically humorous vampire tale.

Here is your dose of the latest film news out of Hollywood and from across the Web for Sept. 30, 2009:

• Screenwriter Roger Avary, who won an Oscar for "Pulp Fiction" and has "Silent Hill 2" and "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" in development, will spend one year in jail for causing a fatal car crash in 2008. One passenger in Avary's car died in the crash in Southern California. Avary also received five years of probation. (Variety)

• John C. Reilly has signed on to star in Miguel Arteta's "Cedar Rapids," a comedy also starring Ed Helms. The film follows a man (Helms) sent to represent his company at a regional insurance conference in Cedar Rapids. Reilly plays a man who also attends the event but doesn't take it seriously. Trailer for 'The Vampire's Assistant' lands online

The Vampire's Assistant Trailer

The first trailer for Paul Weitz's upcoming horror adventure "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" has just debuted online, and you can check it out after the jump.

Based on a series of books by Darren Shan, the film centers on a young man who attends an illegal freak show and later decides to join the club. Before he knows it, he finds himself at the center of a nasty feud between vampires and their rival clan.

Chris Massoglia, Josh Hutcherson, John C. Reilly, Jessica Carlson, Ray Stevenson, Patrick Fugit, Willem Dafoe, Salma Hayek and Ken Watanabe star.

I can't say I absolutely fell in love with this first footage, but then again, the trailer does look kind of entertaining. If done right, this one may actually be intriguing to watch.

Kline, Holmes, Reilly to star in 'The Extra Man'

Kevin Kline, Paul Dano, Katie Holmes and John C. Reilly have signed on to star in Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini's new comedy "The Extra Man."

Variety describes the plot as follows:

"Kline plays a failed playwright who works as an escort for rich widows on the Upper East Side. He develops a mentor-student relationship with a troubled aspiring playwright (Dano)."

The film is based on the novel by Jonathan Ames, who wrote the screenplay with Springer Berman and Pulcini. The duo's directing credits include "The Nanny Diaries" and the superb "American Splendor."

Kline is just the right guy to play a failed playwright. The actor was last seen in "Definitely, Maybe." As for Dano, he most recently delivered a superb performance in "There Will Be Blood."

Holmes' last film was the crappy "Mad Money," while Reilly was last seen in the mildly funny comedy "Step Brothers."

Reilly, Tomei check in with Duplass bros.

John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei and Jonah Hill are in negotiations to star in a Fox Searchlight untitled comedy written and directed by Mark and Jay Duplass.

According to Variety, the film follows a divorced man (Reilly) who falls in love with the woman (Tomei) of his dreams. Unfortunately, she has a son (Hill) who does not want his mother to date anyone.

This premise pretty much sounds exactly like "Mamma's Boy," in which Jon Heder played an idiot son who refused to share his mother (Diane Keaton) with a new man (Jeff Daniels).

Anyway, the Duplass brothers most recently helmed "Baghead." They are currently wrapping up post-production for "The Do-Deca-Pentathlon."

Reilly was last seen in "Step Brothers." He will next star in Paul Weitz's "Cirque du Freak." As for Tomei, she will next be seen in "The Wrestler" with Mickey Rourke. Hill is currently filming Judd Apatow's "Funny People."

Review: “Step Brothers”

Seen on: July 25, 2008

The players: Director: Adam McKay, Writers: Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Cast: Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Adam Scott, Mary Steenburgen, Kathryn Hahn

Facts of interest: None at all.

The plot: Two spoiled adults (Ferrell and Reilly) who still live at home are forced to live together as stepbrothers when their single parents get married.

Our quick thoughts: “Step Brothers” is exactly what you would expect from a raunchy comedy developed by the guys who brought us “Anchorman” and “Talladega Nights.” It’s incredibly silly and yet quite entertaining, boasting a bunch of hilarious as well as ridiculous moments that will only appeal to those who thoroughly enjoy the works of Adam McKay, Judd Apatow, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.

'Step Brothers' web reviews

I just got back from a screening of Adam McKay's latest comedy "Step Brothers," and although it's certainly not one of my favorite flicks of the year so far, I have to admit I had a good time watching Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly acting all silly on the big screen (I will post my review tomorrow afternoon). Let's take a quick look at what critics on the Web have to say about this new Judd Apatow production:

• Katey Rich at CinemaBlend: "The plot of 'Step Brothers' is more irrelevant than it is in most comedies, but that’s not really a bad thing."

Cinematical's James Rocchi: "Jenkins and Steenburgen are actually good, but their performances are so grounded and real and natural that they just make Ferrell and Reilly seem all the more overblown and phony."

• Ron Henriques at LatinoReview: "The film is by no means a perfect comedy, but it hits home closer than many of the films this summer."
