J.J. Abrams to produce untitled project

J.J. Abrams is at it again. The filmmaker and his Bad Robot label will develop an untitled pitch Paramount bought for a couple of million from screenwriters Aline Brosh McKenna and Simon Kinberg.

As usual, Abrams doesn't reveal a word about the project. Plot details are strictly kept under wraps, and at this stage, I don't even know what genre to expect from this one.

Brosh McKenna penned "The Devil Wears Prada," "27 Dresses" and the upcoming "The Ivy Chronicles," which leads me to believe this one could be a comedy. Kinberg's credits include "Sherlock Holmes" and "Jumper."

'Star Trek 2' and Mission: Impossible IV' news!

J.J. Abrams really is the man to go to for solid entertainment in Hollywood right now. I mean, this guy resurrected "Star Trek" earlier this year and just so happened to create one of the summer's most intriguing, most entertaining sci-fi blockbusters.

Of course, everybody is already looking forward to a sequel, and Sci Fi Wire and The Los Angeles recently asked Abrams about his plans for "Star Trek 2." The plan right now is to have the follow-up hit theaters in 2011. Abrams had some interesting things to say about the film, so here is the most important.

Screenwriters set for 'Mission: Impossible IV'

A couple of months ago, we found out J.J. Abrams and Tom Cruise decided to team up to produce "Mission: Impossible IV," and now, the sequel has found its screenwriters.

Writing the fourth installment in the action series are Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec, whose credits include "Alias," "October Road" and "Life on Mars."

Variety says Abrams and Cruise are only set to produce the film at this point. Ethan Hunt's character, however, will also somehow be involved in the film. Not so sure what that means at right now, but I'm sure we'll figure it out once casting takes off.

Appelbaum and Nemec will write a script based on an idea they developed with Abrams. Abrams most recently directed "Star Trek," and Tom Cruise was last seen in "Valkyrie."

Here is your dose of film news for June 11, 2009:

• J.J. Abrams recently said he's honored that Tom Cruise invited him to produce "Mission: Impossible 4." No word on whether Abrams will direct the sequel (he helmed "Mission: Impossible III"), but this confirms we'll definitely get to witness the return of Ethan Hunt. (TV Guide via Spoiler TV)

• Matt Prokop ("High School Musical 3: Senior Year") will join Brendan Fraser in Roger Kumble's upcoming family comedy "Furry Vengeance." Prokop will play the son of a developer (Fraser) who's forced to battle local wildlife while building a new housing subdivision in the Oregon wilderness. (The Hollywood Reporter)

• Peter Hedges is set to write and direct Disney's upcoming modern fable "The Odd Life of Timothy Green." Plot details are strictly kept under wraps. Hedges' directing credits include the hilarious "Dan in Real Life" and intriguing drama "Pieces of April." He also co-wrote "About a Boy." (The Hollywood Reporter)

• Lance Armstrong's cycling comeback didn't kick off that well, but the Tour de France champion is still getting his own biopic, and Gary Ross is set to write the script. Risky Biz Blog says the project is based mainly on Armstrong's book "It’s Not About the Bike." Ross also wrote and directed "Seabiscuit."

Pixar's 'Up' grabs $21M Friday

A scene from UpPixar's latest family adventure "Up" flew to the top of the North American box office Friday with a solid $21.4 milllion in ticket sales (the film opened at 3,766 locations). That's just $1.7 million less than the studio's previous film, "WALL-E."

Directed by Pete Docter, the film follows a 78-year-old man who decides to fulfill his dream and take his entire house on an exciting trip to South America. Edward Asner, Christopher Plummer and Jordan Nagai lead the voice cast.

At No. 2, Shawn Levy's Ben Stiller vehicle "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" grabbed another $7.5 million, lifting its domestic total to $87.3 million.

Meanwhile, Sam Raimi's latest horror flick "Drag Me to Hell" debuted in third place Friday, earning $6.4 million from 2,508 locations. Starring Alison Lohman, the film follows a loan officer who is cursed by a creepy old lady.

McG's "Terminator Salvation" took home $5 million at No. 4, bringing its cumulative gross to $79.6 million. Following in fifth place with $3.6 million was J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek," which reached a total haul of $200.3 million.

New TV spots for 'Star Trek' and 'Dance Flick'

Yeah, I know, the TV spots for J.J. Abrams' upcoming "Star Trek" reboot just keep coming, don't they? Well, if they bored me to death I'd probably ignore them, but to be honest, pretty much each spot I've seen during the last couple of weeks caught my attention. So did this latest one, which features a bit of new footage from the film. Check it out below, and enlist in Star Fleet May 8, 2009.

The second TV spot I have for you today is for Damien Wayans' upcoming comedy "Dance Flick." Well, it's a Wayans production, so my best guess is the film will be retarded (yes "White Chicks" fans, you can hate me for it). Anyway, this is their way of spoofing flicks like "Save the Last Dance" and "Step Up," and all I can say is it looks rather lame. "Dance" hits May 22.
