Movie Review: "A Christmas Carol"

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: November 2, 2009

The players: Director: Robert Zemeckis, Writer: Robert Zemeckis, Cast: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Bob Hoskins, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn

Facts of interest: Based on the story by Charles Dickens, obviously.

The plot: The classic tale is back on the big screen, and Scrooge is still hating Christmas, until three spirits pay him an important visit...

Our thoughts: Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday story “A Christmas Carol” gets the 3D treatment, and the result is a visually stunning big-screen experience I’m sure many cinemagoers out there will enjoy to the fullest extent. As far as I’m concerned, my feelings about this one are mixed.

New 'A Christmas Carol' trailer is here

A Christmas Carol

It's been a while since we last got to see a new trailer for Robert Zemeckis' upcoming 3D motion-capture adventure "A Christmas Carol," but a new preview has landed online, and you can see it after the jump.

In the new version of the classic tale, Ebenezer Scrooge begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, until the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take him on an eye-opening journey.

Jim Carrey is the real star of the film, stepping into the roles of Scrooge and the three ghosts. This new trailer contains new action-packed footage we haven't previously seen, and it promises quite a fun ride in 3D.

Carrey, Gyllenhaal to star in 'Yankees' musical

New Line Cinema is developing a modern big-screen version of the musical "Damn Yankees," and Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal are attached to star in the film.

According to Variety, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel will write the script for the project based on the 1955 Broadway musical, which ended up winning seven Tony Awards.

The story follows Joe Boyd, a happy middle-aged man who makes a deal with the devil to help out an unlucky pro baseball team.

The deal enables Boyd to be transformed into a slugger, but in exchange he must give the devil his soul. The trade says Carrey would play the devil, while Gyllenhaal would star as Boyd.

"Damn Yankees" first made it to the big screen in 1958 in a version directed by George Abbott and Stanley Donen.

Carrey was last seen in "Yes Man." As for Gyllenhaal, he's got several projects coming up, including "Brothers" and "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time."

'I Love You Phillip Morris' gets a first clip!

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa's "I Love You Phillip Morris" debuts at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and here is a first clip from the comedy.

Inspired by a true story, the film stars Jim Carrey as Steven Russell, a talented conman who ends up in a Texas prison, where he falls in love with his cellmate Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor).

In the footage below, Phillip is clearly pissed at Steven for lying to him so much. It's a pretty short clip as you can see, but it does make me want to see more. I'm interested to see how these two actors work together in these roles.

As for Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, their writing credits include "Bad Santa" and the remake of "Bad News Bears," two flicks I absolutely enjoyed.

No U.S. release date has been announced yet, but I will keep you posted. Enjoy.

Review: "Yes Man"

Seen on: December 19, 2008

The players: Director: Peyton Reed, Writers: Jarrad Paul, Andrew Mogel, Nicholas Stoller, Cast: Jim Carrey, Rhys Darby, Bradley Cooper, Zooey Deschanel, Sasha Alexander

Facts of interest: Based on the book by Danny Wallace.

The plot: Carrey plays a man who decides to say yes to everything and anything.

Our thoughts: Yes, Jim Carrey’s latest comedy “Yes Man” is overall enjoyable to watch, but no, it’s by no means one of the best comedies of the year. I wouldn’t even go as far and say it’s a memorable ride. Sure, the film boasts a solid dose of light humor and a couple of refreshing performances, but besides that, it’s a pretty thin and at times quite repetitive experience.

'Yes Man' web reviews

Jim Carrey returns to comedy in Peyton Reed's "Yes Man," a film in which he plays a guy who agrees to say "yes" to everything for a whole year. Zooey Deschanel, Bradley Cooper and John Michael Higgins co-star, and here is what the Web's critics have to say about the film:

• William Goss at Cinematical: "Yeah, no, it's all so familiar and funny in about equal measure, a ready-made Christmas-time crowd-pleaser that'll pretty much play it safe, even in its cruder moments, and will be in circulation on cable soon enough."

LatinoReview's Ron Henriques: "Even some of the gags that fall flat manage to be somewhat entertaining, including Carrey's budding relationship with geeky supervisor Rhys Darby who throws 'Harry Potter' and '300' viewing parties in full costume."

• Matt Goldberg at Collider: "Thankfully, director Peyton Reed knows his comedy and he's able to somewhat restrain Carrey and more importantly, find charm in corny situations."

A first 'I Love You Phillip Morris' trailer hits!

The folks at TrailerAddict posted what looks like an early version of a trailer for Glenn Ficarra and John Requa's upcoming comedy "I Love You Phillip Morris." You can check it out right after the jump.

Inspired by a true story, the film stars Jim Carrey as Steven Russell, a talented conman who ends up in a Texas prison, where he falls in love with his cellmate Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor).

While the preview below certainly looks interesting, it lasts for about three minutes and could use some additional editing. It looks more like a promo clip at this stage.

As for Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, their writing credits include "Bad Santa" and the remake of "Bad News Bears," two flicks I absolutely enjoyed.

As far as I know no U.S. release date has been confirmed yet. I'll let you know as soon as I learn more about it. For now, enjoy the preview below.

Chris Columbus to direct ‘Ripley’s’?

Although the project has been on hold forever, Paramount is still considering “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” a priority among its slot of upcoming flicks.

The latest in talks to direct the film is Chris Columbus, the man behind films such as “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Home Alone” and the first two “Harry Potter” adventures.

Variety says Columbus came up with an entirely new concept for the flick, which was originally scheduled to launch into production in 2007.

Jim Carrey is still attached to star as newspaper columnist-explorer Robert Ripley. Paramount hopes to have the flick ready for 2011.

Columbus is currently post-producing “I Love You, Beth Cooper.” He’s also gearing up to direct “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief,”

Final word: Projects that take so long to develop usually end up sucking anyway. I say forget Ripley and move on to something else. But no one listens to me anyway, so good luck!
