Novel 'Apaches' to finally hit the big screen?

Jerry Bruckheimer has been trying to bring Lorenzo Carcaterra's novel "Apaches" to the big screen for more than a decade, and it now looks like the project is finally moving ahead. At least the writing is.

Variety says Sean O'Keefe and Will Staples will adapt "Apaches," a crime story about a group of retired New York City cops putting together a renegade to bring down the city's most ruthless criminals.

O'Keefe and Staples are also developing several other projects, including "World's Most Wanted" and "The Cruelest Miles." They are among many writers who tried to take a stab at Carcaterra's book.

Sunday film news web roundup: Jerry Bruckheimer goes to 'War;' 'Up in the Air' lands in Toronto

Here's a brief entry with short descriptions and links to film news we either missed or quite honestly didn't have time to add. Here's what you need to know on August 2, 2009:

• Star producer Jerry Bruckheimer has acquired the big-screen rights to the graphic novel "World War Robot," chronicling the battle between humans and robots on Earth, Mars and the moon. More on this @ Variety.

• Jason Reitman ("Juno") will show his next film "Up in the Air" as a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September. The flick follows George Clooney as a frequent-flyer counselor who helps large companies fire their executives. (Variety)

• According to the Risky Biz Blog, Universal is chasing after Jesus, prepping what will be a remake of "Jesus Christ Superstar." Apparently, Uni has also been talking to "(500) Days of Summer" director Marc Webb, who could end up helming "Jesus." More here.

Rob Marshall to direct 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4'?

There's been a lot of talk about a fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" during the past months, and here is the latest: Rob Marshall is in talks to direct the fourth installment in the popular adventure series.

Earlier this year, we found out Gore Verbinski would not return for a fourth film. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Johnny Depp will be back for sure though, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Disney's Oren Aviv recently spoke out about "Pirates 4," saying he believes shooting could being as early as April 2010. Then again, a lot has been said recently, so make sure you're cautious when it comes to these statements.

As far as Marshall is concerned, he directed the Oscar-winning musical "Chicago." The "Memoirs of a Geisha" helmer has the musical "Nine" coming up soon. Will he make Depp dance around as Jack Sparrow on his big pirate ship? Who knows...

Disney's 'G-Force' takes Friday box office lead

G-Forcr at the box office

Walt Disney's latest 3D family adventure "G-Force" crawled to the top of the North American box office Friday with an estimated $11.5 million in ticket sales.

The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced flick follows a squad of smart guinea pigs trying to stop a ruthless villain from taking over the world. The film is currently playing at 3,697 locations.

At No. 2, Robert Luketic's romantic comedy "The Ugly Truth" scored $10.8 million from ticket sales at 2,882 locations. Starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler, the film follows a TV producer struggling to control the cocky host of one of her shows.

Last week's winner "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" slipped to third place, earning $9.3 million for a total gross of $201.1 million. New entry "Orphan" followed at No. 4, taking home $4.9 million. The horror flick is showing at 2,750 locations.

First 'Prince of Persia' poster to show up in 'Confessions of a Shopaholic'

If you want to be among the first to see the very first poster for the upcoming action flick "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," you'll have to go see "Confessions of a Shopaholic," which opens Feb. 13, 2009.

No, I'm not kidding. According to MTV, producer Jerry Bruckheimer deliberately put a "Persia" poster somewhere in "Confessions," his next project to open in theaters. Apparently, it will appear as a Time Square ad about halfway into the flick.

Bruckheimer sure knows how to promote his flicks, and while this type of advertising is not exactly new, it is the first time we get to see an official poster in a movie before anywhere else.

"Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" is directed by Mike Newell and stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Ben Kingsley. The film is set for release May 28, 2010.

The 'G-Force' trailer is here, and it stinks!

Who knows, maybe the actual film will deliver the goods, but the first trailer for the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced family adventure "G-Force" just looks terrible. You can check it out after the jump.

The deal is this: G-Force is the codename of a group of highly trained animals (mostly guinea pigs) who assist the government in stopping a ruhtless billionaire from taking over the world. What the...?

Disney will release the whole thing in 3D July 24, 2009. Yep, soon you'll be able to see super guinea pigs jumping straight into your face.

Nicholas Cage, Penelope Cruz, Tracy Morgan and Steve Buscemi are on board for the voice work. Starring as real-life characters are Bill Nighy, Will Arnett and Kelli Garner.

What the...? First look at super guinea pigs in 'G-Force'

Just leave those darn animals alone! USA Today recently premiered a couple of stills from Hoyt Yeatman's "G-Force," a 3D action adventure produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. You ready? Then check out this crappy pic:

Okay, as you can see, these are two guinea pigs wearing some high-tech spy gear. What the...? Indeed, "G-Force" is about a group of super-smart animal commandoes helping the government stop a ruthless billionaire from taking over the world.

Now, I don't know about you, but this project just sounds (and looks) disastrous. I mean, guinea pigs doing spy work for humans? That's sick, isn't it? Anyway, if you can't live without stupid animal movies, head over to USA Today for more pictures.

Bruckheimer chats ‘Pirates 4,’ ‘Lone Ranger’

Last month, Walt Disney announced a whole bunch of new projects the studio is gearing up to develop, including “Pirates of the Caribbean 4,” “National Treasure 3” and “The Lone Ranger.”

Over the past few weeks we’ve heard quite a bit of rumors about these projects, but now it’s time to get some info from a more legitimate source: producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

As reported by Coming Soon and other online sites, Bruckheimer recently said that writers are currently working on the scripts for a fourth “Pirates” movie and a third “Treasure.”

"We've sat with the writers and we're working up the story and plotlines right now,” he said.

He added that the script for “The Lone Ranger” is almost done. As far as the casting for that film is concerned, Bruckheimer said he’s not ready to talk about casting quite yet.

Bruckheimer also said he would like to see the new “Pirates” flick open in 2012, and preferably in IMAX. Stay tuned for more information on those movies in the near feature.

Captain Jack will be back for fourth ‘Pirates’

It’s been quite a day for Disney. Besides announcing that “Cars 2” will hit theaters in 2011 and Johnny Depp will play the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” the studio also revealed new information about several other upcoming films.

As Variety reports, Depp has also agreed to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow for a fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” flick. That’s all the information we have about that project at this stage.

Additionally, Depp will play Tonto in the adaptation of “The Lone Ranger.” Wow, looks like he's going to be really busy working on this close relationship with Disney.

Unfortunately, Jerry Bruckheimer and Nicholas Cage also announced a third “National Treasure” flick. I really don’t think making a fourth “Pirates” is a good idea, but another “Treasure”? Why doesn’t anyone come up with something new and original anymore?

Despite the sequel mania at today’s presentation, the fact that Depp boarded “Alice in Wonderland” is good news indeed. What do you guys think about all these announcements? Are you loving it? Or are you sick of Disney?

Randall Wallace to adapt ‘Killing Rommel’

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney Pictures have acquired the rights to Steven Pressfield’s novel “Killing Rommel,” according to Variety.

The story of the book centers on the British Long Range Desert Group as it tries to stop German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, who defeated the British in the North African desert during WWII.

Randall Wallace will write the adaptation with Pressfield, whose novel “The Legend of Bagger Vance” also made it to the big screen in 2000.

Wallace’s writing credits include “Braveheart,” “Pearl Harbor” and “We Were Soliders.” He also recently signed on to direct Disney’s “Secretariat,” a film about American racehorse owner Penny Chenery.
