Movie Review: “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel”

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Seen on: December 19, 2009

The players: Director: Betty Thomas, Writers: Jon Vitti, Glenn Berger, Jonathan Aibel, Cast: Jason Lee, Zachary Levi, Anjelah Johnson, Wendie Malick, Justin Long

Facts of interest: None!

The plot: The chipmunks go to school and clash with the chipettes. That's all there is to say about this one.

Our thoughts: What can I say? I walked into “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” expecting a terrible sequel to a horrible first film, and that’s exactly what I got: an unnecessary follow-up about three annoying CGI creatures whose shrill voices and lack of brain nearly made my ears (and eyes) bleed.

Crappy new trailer for 'Chipmunks' sequel hits

This holiday season at the movies is ruined, as Betty Thomas' "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" is set to tear apart the big screen when it opens Dec. 25, 2009. Here's a crappy new trailer for the sequel.

I still don't know how a mess such as "Alvin and the Chipmunks" could bag $217 million domestically, but it did, and here we are again, with the annoying chipmunks creating a mess, playing football and...

Daily news dose: Jason Lee boards 'Couple of Dicks;' Christina Applegate is 'Going the Distance'

Here is your dose of film news for July 1, 2009:

• Jason Lee and Michelle Trachtenberg are the latest to join Kevin Smith's upcoming Warner Bros. comedy "A Couple of Dicks." Robb and Mark Cullen wrote the script for the action comedy, which also stars Bruce Willis, Tracey Morgan, Seann William Scott and Adam Brody. Willis plays a cop who, along with his partner (Morgan), encounters a mysterious gangster and rescues a Mexican chick during their investigation into the theft of a valuable baseball card. (Variety)

• Charlie Day and Christina Applegate have signed on to star alongside Drew Barrymore and Justin Long in Nanette Burstein's upcoming romantic comedy “Going the Distance" for New Line Cinema. The film focuses on a couple’s attempt to maintain a long-distance relationship. One lives in Chicago while the other is located in Los Angeles. Day will play Long's best friend, while Applegate stars as Barrymore's sister. (The Hollywood Reporter)

• Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker will star in Thom Fitzgerald's upcoming comedy "Cloudburst." The film follows on two female lovers who decide to break out of the nursing facility where one of them is staying. Dukakis recently starred in "Away From Her" and "In the Land of Women." (Variety)

Lame new teaser trailer for 'Chipmunks 2' debuts

Tim Hill's "Alvin and the Chipmunks" was one of the lamest films I've seen in years, but believe it or not, this mess of a movie actually pulled in $217 million domestically. No kidding.

Shortly after the film's success, a sequel was announced, and now it's almost here. Opening day is Dec. 25, 2009, and here is a brand-new (and boring) teaser trailer.

In "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," the annoying chipmunks run into the chipettes. Darn, that CG just looks awful, doesn't it?

Anyway, I hardly doubt this follow-up will be better than its predecessor. Even though I don't know how bad it will be, one thing is for sure: I already can't wait for this year's Christmas Day to be over.

Betty Thomas to helm 'Chipmunks' sequel

Betty Thomas is set to direct the sequel to last year's box office hit "Alvin and the Chipmunks," the Hollywood Reporter announced earlier today.

Not much is known about "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakel," but the trade says the film will introduce the Chipettes, the female singing rodents.

Apparently, Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney will return to voice the annoying chipmunks. Whether Jason Lee will reprise his role as Dave is unknown at this point.

Thomas' most recent big-screen effort was "John Tucker Must Die." Her credits also include "I Spy" and "Doctor Dolittle."

Final word: I hated "Alvin snd the Chipmunks" to death, and the fact alone that we are punished with a sequel is disturbing. I still don't understand how the first film made more than $217 million.
