Daily news dose: Edgar Wright talks his next film; 'The Big Valley' headed to big screen

Here is your dose of film news for July 13, 2009:

• Edgar Wright is currently busy shooting "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," but the big question is: what will the filmmaker be working on next? Well, according to Empire, Wright will try to make "Baby Driver." He said, "Probably because it’s not an adaptation or anything, or a sequel to anything else. I’d like to just make it in private, basically." Of course, this means his "Ant-Man" flick will be delayed for a while.

• The 1960s TV series "The Big Valley" will be heading to the big screen soon, with Daniel Adams directing his own script. The original series starred Barbara Stanwyck as the matriarch of a wealthy family in 19th-century Stockton, Calif. Adams' directorial credits also include "The Golden Boys" and the upcoming "The Lightkeepers." (Variety)

• Ioan Gruffudd has signed on to star in "Banking on Mr. Toad," a biopic about Kenneth Grahame, former secretary of the Bank of England who later wrote the classic children's book "The Wind in the Willows." Samantha Morton is in talks to play his wife, with Bruce Beresford attached to direct. Gruffudd recently starred in "W." and "Fireflies in the Garden." (Variety)

New teaser poster for Oliver Stone’s ‘W.’ surfaces

The guys over at AICN today posted a brand-new poster for Oliver Stone’s upcoming George W. Buch biopic “W.” The film from a script by Stanley Weiser will focus primarily on what drove George W. Bush (played by Josh Brolin) to make a run for the U.S. presidency, but the plot will also examine part of his career as the commander in chief.

A first teaser trailer for the film was released just a few weeks ago. Click here to see it. Meanwhile, enjoy the new poster below. It’s in fact a quite simple one-sheet, but it think it has an interesting strength to it as well. What do you guys think? “W.” also stars Elizabeth Banks, Richard Dreyfuss, Thandie Newton, Ioan Gruffudd, James Cromwell and Ellen Burstyn. The flick opens in limited release Oct. 17, 2008.

Check out the teaser trailer for ‘W.’

The first teaser for Oliver Stone’s upcoming George W. Bush biopic is now online, and although it doesn’t reveal much about the plot itself, the footage at least shows us what the central characters look like. Most of the actors appearing in the trailer wear heavy makeup, but they certainly look a lot like the real people they’re portraying.

In short, “W.” chronicles the life and presidency of George W. Bush, with a focus on what drove the man to go into politics and run for president. Josh Brolin stars as the titular character. Elizabeth Banks, Ioan Gruffudd, Thandie Newton, Ellen Burstyn, Jeffrey Wright and James Cromwell co-star.

Although Stone said his film is not going to bash Bush, I have a feeling we’ll see more negative stuff surrounding the central character than good. But who knows, maybe Stone manages to follow Stephen Frears’ flawless approach to his main character in “The Queen.” I’m sure we’ll get a full trailer soon, but for now, enjoy this sneak peek just above. “W.” opens Oct. 17, 2008.
