Hugh Jackman won't host Oscars, but who cares?

Sure, Hugh Jackman did a great job hosting the 81st annual Academy Awards, but the show as a whole was not as exciting as many of us expected. One thing is for sure though: Jackman won't be back in 2010.

Sources tell Variety Jackman turned down the job as host for the 82nd annual Academy Awards, which will take place March 7, 2010. The actor did say though that he may return to host in the future.

That leaves the question: who's next in line? The folks over at WAMG say they've received word that Neil Patrick Harris would replace Jackman. It's only a rumor, but I admit that could work.

Hugh Jackman ready to box in 'Real Steel'

Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman, star of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Australia," is in talks to play the lead character in Shawn Levy's upcoming futuristic robot boxing movie "Real Steel," which DreamWorks is developing.

Set in the future, the film focuses on a world in which human boxing is forbidden. Instead, big humanoid robots step in to take over the sport. Variety says Jackman will play a man who finds a talented robot boxer.

John Gatins, the man behind "Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story" and "Coach Carter," is rewriting the most recent draft. Dan Gilroy and Les Bohem worked on previous drafts. Levy is working on the script as well.

Christopher McQuarrie to write 'Wolverine 2'

It's been a decent week for news about the sequel to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," and here's the latest: Christopher McQuarrie is set to write the script for Fox's follow-up.

McQuarrie won an Oscar for his "The Usual Suspects" screenplay, and he most recently wrote "Valkyrie" for Bryan Singer. He also wrote and directed 2000's "The Way of the Gun."

As Hugh Jackman announced recently, the sequel will be based on the series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, which was published in 1982. Wolverine will head to Japan this time.

"X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which Gavin Hood directed, proved to be quite successful at the box office earlier this year after pulling almost $180 million domestically.

Hugh Jackman briefly talks 'Wolverine' sequel

Hugh Jackman talks Wolverine sequel

Gavin Hood's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" proved to be quite successful at the box office after pulling almost $180 million domestically, so it's no surprise that a sequel to the action film is already in development. In fact, talks for "Wolverine 2" already emerged last year.

Last thing we heard Hugh Jackman was already all set to return as the title character, and now the actor has briefly updated his fans on where they are with "Wolverine 2."

At the Teen Choice Awards, where "Wolverine" took home a prize, Jackman mentioned Logan will be heading to Japan in the sequel.

"Japan is where we're heading, [and] we're starting to work on it now. We're in the ... first steps of developing that story," he told MTV backstage.

Hugh Jackman goes musical for 'Showman'

Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman's musical number as the host 81st Academy Awards has impressed the folks at 20th Century Fox, as the studio has recruited him to star in its upcoming "The Greatest Showman on Earth" musical.

Jackman will slip into the role of American entertainer P.T. Barnum, who promoted celebrated hoaxes and founded the three-ring circus.

Variety says the film will also look at his relationship with singer Jenny Lind, a role which is apparently being written for Anne Hathaway. You may remember her joining Jackman in his excellent Oscar act.

Jenny Bicks, whose credits include "Men in Trees" and "Sex and the City," will write the script, and Fox is apparently talking to singer Mika to write music and lyrics.

Here are some brief film news you shouldn't miss on July 15, 2009:

• Hugh Jackman is attached to star in 20th Century Fox's "Avon Man," based on a pitch by Kevin Bisch, screenwriter of "Hitch." The story follows a man who's laid off and tries his luck as an Avon salesman. Variety says the project takes on a "Full Monty" vibe.

Hugh Jackman set for 'Wolverine' sequel

Hugh Jackman in The Prestige

Wow, I guess Hugh Jackman really is the man right now. It may be a little to early to crown him king of Hollywood, but according to Variety, Jackman's about ready to star in pretty much anything. First of all, we found out yesterday that he is in talks to star in "Ghostopolis." Another project he will be boarding is a "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" sequel, which the trade says will center on the samurai story line from the comics.

But wait! Jackman's got more in store for you. He will also star in Fox's "Personal Security," which follows a detective who's ordered to play bodyguard for a spoiled teen heiress. Another flick he's considering is "Drive," in which he would play a race car driver who spends his nights driving getaway cars. And finally, he will also appear in "Carousel," a new version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic. You go Jack!

Hugh Jackman to visit 'Ghostopolis'

Hugh Jackman is putting his big claws away for a while to slip into a Ghostbuster-like hero instead. The star from "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" is in talks to star in "Ghostopolis," the big-screen adaptation of Doug TenNapel's graphic novel. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jackman is also attached to produce the project.

The plot focuses on a Supernatural Immigration Task Force agent who spends his days sending ghosts who have escaped into the human world back home to Ghostopolis. But when a human boy is accidentally sent to the ghost world, our guy teams up with a female ghost to get him back. Well, sounds interesting at this point.

Jackman is currently celebrating the $87 million opening weekend of "Wolverine." That'll make people forget the disappointing performance of his previous film "Australia," which I really enjoyed.

Movie Review: “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”

Seen on: May 1, 2009

The players: Director: Gavin Hood, Writers: David Benioff, Scott Silver, James Vanderbilt, Cast: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Lynn Collins, Danny Huston, Ryan Reynolds

Facts of interest: Gavin Hood also directed "Tsotsi" and "Rendition."

The plot: The film traces the origin of Logan aka. Wolverine, who hunts down Victor Creed and William Stryker after they screw him over big time.

Our thoughts: What you’ve seen in the trailers for Gavin Hood’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” is exactly what you get: fast-paced action sequences with massive explosions, but barely any story. I can’t say the first big blockbuster of the summer season at the movies totally disappointed me, but I admit I left the theater dissatisfied.

'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' web reviews

Hugh Jackman in X-Men Origins: Wolverine

The summer season at the movies has kicked off, and the first blockbuster to open is Gavin Hood's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which stars Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Taylor Kitsch and Ryan Reynolds. Here's what some of the Web's critics think about the film:

• Jeffrey M. Anderson @ Cinematical: "It's pre-planned, committee-made, audience-tested and risk-free, with no room for authentic, messy, personal emotions."

• Katey Rich @ CinemaBlend: "Wolverine is a bad, maybe even terrible movie, but it's also entertaining in its own dumb way."

• Ron Henriques @ LatinoReview: "Just about anything could have been done with the origin of Wolverine, yet even if they placed him in an environment as silly as outer space, the bottom line is that a good story was needed where the audience could emotionally connect with the character."
