Movie Review: "Final Destination 5"

Seen on: August 12, 2011

The players: Director: Steven Quale, Writer: Eric Heisserer, Cast: Nicholas D’Agosto, Emma Bell, David Koechner, Tony Todd

Fact of interest: Actor Cory Monteith appeared in “Final Destination 3” as a student at McKinley High School… (the geeks should get the joke)

The plot: Death sets its sights on a group of people who miraculously survive a tragic bridge collapse.

Our thoughts: One could make the argument that, for horror franchises that go on for multiple films, the fifth film is generally considered a low point (case in point:"Friday the 13th Part 5," where Jason isn’t really even Jason, or "Nightmare on Elm Street," where Freddy has a kid).

The trailer for 'Paranormal Activity 3'

Here we go again: are you ready for a mix of cheap and solid scares? Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman's "Paranormal Activity 3" will open in theaters Oct. 21, 2011, and the first trailer is now available online. Check it out after the jump.

This time, it looks like we're in for a prequel, focusing on the events that obviously set the scene for the first "Paranormal Activity" and its sequel. Worldwide, the first flick bagged a total of $193.3 million, while No. 2 grossed $176.7 million.

Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman are best known for "Catfish." Although this trailer for "Paranormal Activity 3" looks halfway decent, I have the feeling it may be time to shut this franchise down for good. You can do only so much with this material...

Here is the trailer for 'The Thing' reboot

The poster for Universal Pictures' "The Thing" reboot was released just two days ago, and now the trailer has found its way to the online world. Check it out after the jump. Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. directed the horror flick that serves as prelude to the 1982 classic.

The plot? At an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson (Ulrich Thomsen).

Co-starring in "The Thing" are Eric Christian Olsen, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen and Kim Bubbs. This trailer doesn't look all that frightening, and for some reason, it strongly reminds me of a certain "X-Files" episode. Copy much?

Universal Pictures' "The Thing" reboot is set for release Oct. 14, 2011, and here is the brand new poster for the horror flick, which Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. directed. Looks interesting for sure, so check it out in full after the jump.

The film is described as a reimagining of "The Thing from Another World" and John Carpenter's "The Thing." Let's hope it will deliver some scares.

Alexandra Daddario boards 'Chainsaw Massacre 3D'

Back in the days when it came to casting "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," actress Alexandra Daddario caused quite the debate when it was announced she would play Annabeth. This time, I doubt something like that will happen.

Daddario is now set to star in the upcoming "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D," which John Luessenhop ("Takers") will direct. Adam Marcus and Debra Sullivan wrote the script, which picks up after the 1974 film, according to Variety.

"Chainsaw 3D" is set for release Oct. 5, 2012, and Daddario is set for the lead character, who's running from Leatherface. She also starred in "Hall Pass," and she should be back as Annabeth in "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters."

'Cabin in the Woods' gets an image

Chances are we will at one point be able to see Drew Goddard's horror film "The Cabin in the Woods," because the film is not dead yet. To prove it, Bloody-Disgusting posted the first image from the flick, which stars Chris Hemsworth and Bradley Whitford.

"Cabin in the Woods" was supposed to hit theaters a while ago, but MGM's recent financial trouble caused major delays. Not much is known about the plot, but it's described as "a twisted and unusual take on the familiar "cabin in the woods" formula."

Kristen Connolly, Richard Jenkins, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams and Brian White star. Looking at this still above, I keep wondering: what the hell are they all looking at? A dead monster of some sorts? A spider crawling around? A dent in the floor?

New poster for 'Final Destination 5'

Death will get to tear apart a whole bunch of people for a fifth time in "Final Destination 5," which opens in theaters Aug. 12, 2011. A new poster for the horror sequel is now online, and you can check it out after the jump. Beware the skull.

Steven Quale directed "Destination 5," which stars Nicholas D'Agosto, Emma Bell, Miles Fisher, Arlen Escarpeta, David Koechner, Tony Todd and Courtney B. Vance. The story? Same as before, so no need to elaborate. Oh, of course, it will open in 3D.

New photos from 'Shark Night 3D'

I gotta tell you, "Shark Night 3D" is not among the films to get me excited right now this summer, but the David R. Ellis-helmed horror flick will open Sept. 2, 2011, and of course, I'll give a fair chance. New photos from the film have surfaced online, and you can see them here.

Arriving by boat at her family’s Louisiana lake island cabin, Sara and her friends quickly strip down to their swimsuits for a weekend of fun in the sun. But when star football player Malik stumbles from the salt-water lake with his arm torn off, the party mood quickly evaporates.

You get to see some swimsuits in these pics for sure, including a rather decent butt. The film stars Sara Paxton, Chris Carmack and Joel David Moore. The question is: can the sharks be more fun to watch than the recent piranhas? We'll find out soon. (Source: ShockTillYouDrop.com)

Criminally Underrated Horror: "The Changeling"

Of all the different horror sub-genres, the "haunted house film" has always intrigued me. It's probably because of the fact that while its rules are very simple—straightforward narrative, standard three-act structure, predictable plot resolutions, etc.—there's a lot of room for creative, and sometimes even innovative, filmmaking.

Now, there are certain things that all haunted house movies, regardless of when or where they were made, have in common: strange noises, self-propelled doors, central mysteries the protagonist must piece together, etc., etc. What separates the classic ("The Haunting") from the ridiculous ("The House Where Evil Dwells") is that "extra something" they bring to the table, that intangible element that makes them unique.

Tom Six responds to 'Human Centipede II' ban

By now I'm sure you've heard the British Board of Film Classification has banned Tom Six's "The Human Centipede II: Full Sequence." Now Empire got in touch with the director of the well-known horror flicks, and he's clearly not amused by what's going on.

He said, "Thank you BBFC for putting spoilers of my movie on your website and thank you for banning my film in this exceptional way. Apparently I made an horrific horror-film, but shouldn't a good horror film be horrific? My dear people it is a f****cking MOVIE.

"It is all fictional. Not real. It is all make-belief. It is art. Give people their own choice to watch it or not. If people can't handle or like my movies they just don't watch them. If people like my movies they have to be able to see it any time, anywhere also in the UK.”
