'Harold & Kumar' creators have 'One Night Stan'

The folks behind the "Harold & Kumar" films have set up their new project at Lionsgate, as Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are set to direct "One Night Stan" written by Josh Friedlander.

The Hollywood Reporter says the film follows a man who discovers his fiancee has had many more sexual partners than he before they got together. So before marrying her, he embarks on a night for some catch-up.

Hurwitz and Schlossberg last wrote and directed "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay," a comedy I simply couldn't warm up to. Some of their other upcoming projects include "'Til Beth Do Us Part" and "Grandma vs. Grandma."

"One Night Stan" sure sounds like a concept that could be funny if done right, but as long as Hurwitz and Schlossberg stick to the "Harold & Kumar" kind of humor, I'm not so sure they'll manage to win me over.

Daily news dose: Anime 'Mad Max' coming?; 'Ghosts/Aliens' gets big-screen treatment

Here's your dose of film news for March 6, 2009:

• Trey Hamburger's novel "Ghosts/Aliens" will be adapted to the big screen. In the book, two stoner friends embark on a mission to find ghosts and aliens. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the book may even be turned into a television series. Hamburger's novel hit shelves in November.

• Paramount Pictures has bought "Grandma vs. Grandma," a screenplay written by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the folks who also brought you the "Harold & Kumar" flicks. The story follows two grandmothers who launch into a war for the affection of their grandchildren while the parents are away for a while. (The Hollywood Reporter)

• George Miller, director of the "Mad Max" flicks, recently told MTV that he's planning an anime "Mad Max" flick without the involvement of Mel Gibson. “I’ve always loved anime, in particular the Japanese sensibility. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do," he told MTV.

• The folks at ShockTillYouDrop have learned that Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have set April 16, 2010 as the release date for their remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," directed by Samuel Bayer from a script by Wesley Strick. Freddy Krueger will be back for sure!

'Harold & Kumar' creators set up new flick

"Harold & Kumar" creators Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz are set to write and direct "'Til Beth Do Us Part" for Warner Bros., according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Specific plot details are unknown at this stage, but the main story line focuses on two young males who see their friendship tested when one of them gets engaged.

Says the trade: the movie will share some elements with the stoner franchise for which the writer-directors are known -- most notably, the comedic bond between two young males -- but will be more grounded and contain fewer of its zany flourishes.

Schlossberg and Hurwitz are known for writing "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" and writing and directing "Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay."

I know it's still early and we don't much about this project, but I have to admit this premise does not win me over at all. I still hope Schlossberg and Hurwitz come up with something funnier than "Harold & Kumar," but at this stage, I really doubt it. We'll see.

‘Harold & Kumar’ are at it again… for the third time

Harold Lee and Kumar Patel are not ready to call it quits quite yet. According to Variety, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg will return to write and direct a third installment in the series starring John Cho and Kal Penn.

Although no details about the sequel’s plot have been released yet, the story line will likely follow the two stoners as they get in plenty of trouble in Amsterdam. Cho and Penn are expected to return as the titular characters.

“Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” opened in 2004 and took home $18.2 million at the box office. This year’s follow-up “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay” collected $38 million domestically.

The film will be produced by Mandate Pictures, which also worked on “Juno” and the upcoming Michael Cera romance “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.”

I can’t say I’m excited about this because I pretty much hated “Guantanamo Bay,” but I assume fans of the franchise are more than willing to watch Harold and Kumar invade the big screen for a third round. What do you think? Do you really want those guys to return?
